Dunkin’ Donuts Axed This Popular Menu Item

Enjoy this iconic iced beverage before it’s gone.

Dunkin’ Donuts is about to make a major change to its menu. Among the familiar frosted donuts, flavored coffees, and breakfast sandwiches, Dunkin’ customers could rely on the frozen Coffee Coolatta, a sweet blend of coffee extract, sugar, cream, and ice. In such flavors as caramel, French vanilla, and mocha, the Coolattas were synonymous with the donut chain, and more like a liquid dessert than an actual coffee.

A large Frozen Mocha Coffee Coolatta will set you back 990 calories — more than half of what you should eat in a day — and 133 grams of sugar. That’s as much belly-bloating sugar as 11 Dunkin’ glazed donuts. (For reference, the American Heart Association recommends no more than 35 grams of added sugar a day).

As more people become more obsessed with coffee, it seems the popular donut chain is looking to rebrand their offerings of frozen beverages. That means nixing the popular Coolattas completely. "Coolattas are a platform we've had for years," Paul Racicot, Dunkin's director of culinary innovation, said, according to Business Insider. "But, we believe it's time we… contemporize our frozen platform."

Instead of Coolattas, Dunkin’ will be offering Frozen Dunkin’ Coffee, so far in just the coffee flavor. Just in time for summer, when the hot weather brings an uptick in frozen beverage sales. The new frozen coffees come on the heels of the cold brew launch in summer of 2016, and Dunkin’ is also looking to test a Caramel Shaved Iced Espresso, which is espresso shots served on ice with caramel and whipped cream.

Although the chain is mixing up its frozen drink offering in an attempt to make it more coffee-like, the new frozen coffees still pack a lot of calories and sugar: A large frozen Dunkin’ Coffee has 840 calories, 35 grams of fat, and 123 grams of sugar. So the change seems to be more marketing than health-based.

If you’re looking for your caffeine fix at Dunkin’, you’re better off sticking to a regular iced coffee with skim milk. If you must mix it up, opt for one of their unsweetened, sugar-free flavor shots that come in 7 flavors: French vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, toasted almond, blueberry, raspberry, or coconut. In the meantime, the other fruit-flavored coolattas will still be available, if you don’t mind throwing caution to the wind and downing more than 50 grams of sugar at a time.
