And life’s more fun when you’re feeling hot. So in the spirit of summer, here are four quick ways you can blast fat, tone up and get T-shirt-ready, with a few tricks you can do this long weekend.
FLATTEN YOUR BELLY
…with beef—grass-fed only!
Yes, you can eat steak and get a flat belly. A study in Nutrition Journal found that grass-fed meat contains higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which reduce inflammation, improve insulin resistance and help the liver speed fat out of the body. Grass-fed beef is naturally leaner and has fewer calories than conventional meat. For example, a 7-ounce conventional strip steak, trimmed of fat, will run you 386 calories and 16 grams of fat. But a 7-ounce grass-fed strip steak is only 234 calories and five grams of fat. So fire up the grill guilt-free: Pair it with sweet potatoes, spinach and a dash of cayenne pepper for extra flab-burning effects.
REDUCE YOUR BLOAT
…with hibiscus tea.
Having a hard time buttoning those jeans that just fit a couple days ago? Breathe easy: you didn’t actually pack on the pounds. Your new paunch is likely a result of eating some salty foods or hormonal fluctuations—both scenarios can cause the body to store sodium and fluids. Luckily, science has a solution: According to numerous studies, flavonoids and other compounds found in the hibiscus plant help to counteract bloating by influencing how aldosterone, the hormone that regulates water and electrolytes balance, affects the body. TONE YOUR ARMS
…with close-grip pushups.
The secret to looking good in a tee is right behind you—in your triceps. To build them within minutes, try close-grip pushups. Get into a pushup position with your hands inside shoulder width. Keeping your abs braced, lower your body until your chest is just above the floor and then push up. So three sets of 20, if you can. For an advanced workout, use a resistance band for resistance by wrapping it around your back and holding an end in each hand.
BOOST YOUR BOOBS
…by boosting your pecs, with a plyo pushup.
Perform pushups, as you normally would, but explode upward on each rep so that your hands leave the floor and you can clap before landing. When you land, go immediately into the next rep. Stop the set as soon as your movement slows, even if it’s before six reps are completed.
And guys, speaking of boobs, avoid shrimp and tilapia. Certain foods, called “estrogenics,” actually act on men to “feminize” them by reducing their testosterone levels and boosting their estrogen. This can result in man boobs. Since certain pesticides are “endocrine disruptors,” meaning they play with our male/female hormones, avoid foods with high loads, like shrimp, tilapia, eel and farmed salmon.
