The #1 Body Part to Slim Down for Others to Find You More Attractive

Although many weight loss journeys stem from our own personal goals, a lot of them begin because we crave approval from others. Which begs the question: Just how much weight do we need to lose for others to notice?

Whether it’s Facebook, LinkedIn or a dating app, there’s a reason so many people have really old profile photos. As the years go by, not only are the wrinkles appearing, but the extra pounds start to creep into your face. And according to researchers at the University of Toronto, in order for others to find you more physically appealing, that’s exactly where you need to lose weight. It’s far more important to lose belly fat and eat healthy, but in the name of vanity, here’s what you need to know.

These facial changes are noticeable after about an 8 to 9 pound loss. However, it takes double that to be viewed as more attractive. More specifically, approximately 14 pounds for women and 18 pounds for men.

Why is the face the #1 body part for sex appeal? According to Nicholas Rule, associate professor and Canada Research Chair in Social Perception and Cognition at University of Toronto, the perception of beauty based off of weight in the face is likely due to our perception of health. And facial weight is an accurate indicator of a person’s body mass index (BMI) and a good indicator of their overall health. The heavier a person is, the more weight they carry in their face and the higher their risk for disease. From an evolutionary standpoint this makes sense: We want to mate with a healthy individual so that we produce healthy offspring. There’s two sides to every coin, though, and we’re certain there’s a point at which weight loss in the face becomes unattractive. If you’re trying to lose weight, you’ll probably notice a difference in your waistline after just a few pounds. This is especially true if it’s also the first place you gain weight. Don’t get discouraged if others aren’t noticing—unless they’re seeing you naked, they probably won’t. If you really want to shed the pounds to look slimmer in your face, you must focus on eating a healthy diet. Bottom line: If you are seeking the approval of others and are making healthier choices to look more like your younger, thinner profile pic, at least this is one slightly misguided quest that can lead to a slew of health benefits.
