Before-and-after photos never tell the whole story. And in the age of Instagram—where an entire journey or transformation can be presented to viewers in just a single, polished photo—people who are struggling with their own weight will often lose sight of this fact.
We forget—or just don’t know—how much time, effort, sweat, and even failures go into a successful weight-loss transformation. One of our favorite Weight-Loss Tips from Real People Who Lost Over 50 Pounds came from Laura Micetich (she lost 115 pounds!), who said, “I don't have a simple solution for you. I have the cold, honest truth: It requires work.”
She’s right: weight loss takes hard work, and WEtv’s new docu-dramedy Mama June: From Not to Hot is sure to deliver on what really goes on behind that powerful message. The show follows Mama June’s journey to lose weight and improve her health.
If you’re not familiar with the “Coupon Queen,” allow us to introduce you to June Shannon, who also goes by “Mama June.” The reality star has been in the spotlight ever since her and her daughter, Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson, appeared on the TLC show Toddlers and Tiaras in 2012 and then after on Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.
At her largest weight, Mama June tipped the scale at 460 pounds. But it wasn’t until she appeared on the show The Doctors in early 2015 that June realized she needed to make a lifestyle change. Although June was there because the doctors wanted to help her obese, asthmatic daughter Alana, Dr. Travis Stork said it wasn’t going to be entirely up to Alana to improve her own health. “As mom, you need to take some responsibility here,” Dr. Stork explained to June.
Ever since, Mama June has embarked on the weight-loss mission documented in this new series.
Prior to the series premiere, Mama June's trainer, Kenya Crooks, along with her daughters, Lauryn and Alana, revealed some behind-the-scenes info about June’s journey in an interview with ET.
With the help of a gastric sleeve surgery in May of 2015, Crooks explained to ET that June has shed the pounds with simple diet and exercise changes. “We’ve done a lot of weight training, we’ve done a lot of plyometrics, we’re doing a lot of running,” said Crooks. Alana chimed in saying that the family used to “eat this big fried chicken” but upon June starting her diet, now they “eat the small fried chicken.” It might not sound like much, but simply changing your portion sizes is one of the best ways to cut calories.
June started the show at 352 pounds, and the teasers for the series claim the Georgia-based mom is now down to a size 4—but you’ll have to watch until the end of the season to see how much weight she’s lost and what she looks like now. We’re excited to witness her transformation, and hope to learn more weight-loss tips!
"Mama June: From Not to Hot" airs Fridays at 10:00 PM on WEtv.
