What in the World is Watermelon Jerky?

We bet you’ve never heard of jerky falling under the vegan foods category before, but this item does just that. Read up on the industry’s newest form of jerky!

“Pass the Jerky!” I said to my friend at a picnic last weekend. She handed me a slab of beef jerky and I looked at her, laughed, and said, “Wrong jerky.”

What I was referring to was Sakara Life’s scrumptious watermelon jerky which, contrary to what you may have assumed, contains no meat at all! Made with nothing but dried organic watermelon, it tastes exactly like an old-school Fruit by the Foot. I got to sample the treat for myself here in the office and the minute my brain registered what was in my mouth I felt a surge of nostalgia. I loved that fruit-flavored snack as a child, and now, there’s a healthier alternative, which is a major win in my book.

If you’ve got ambitions to lose 10 pounds but have a serious hankering for gummy bears, opt for half a bag of this jerky. It's a sweet and chewy treat that contains 120 calories and 26 grams of sugar. We aren’t gonna lie, that sugar content is pretty steep, but just know that all of it comes from the fruit itself. As for the texture, it’s not quite as chewy or coarse as a dried piece of meat; in fact, it’s rather light and soft. After chewing on it for a bit, its outer layer almost seems to dissolve atop your tongue, enabling you to taste all of the sweetness of a juicy watermelon— just without the water, essentially. While fresh fruit is always best because it keeps you fuller than dried, this is the perfect snack to take with you on-the-go. (You can get your hands on a pack here!)
