You Are Eating Way Too Much Sugar

If you’re an avid Eat This, Not That! reader, you likely know that when it comes to bad-for-you nutrients, sugar is currently public enemy number one—especially now that the war against trans fats has been won.

Consuming too much of the sweet stuff can cause weight gain and a slew of diseases including high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. And, you guessed it, most Americans are eating way too much of it. The World Health Organization says to maintain optimal health, people should consume no more than 10 teaspoons of sugar a day — the average American downs three times that amount. That adds up to one pound of sugar every three days! It’s hard to image, we know, and thanks to "Sugar of the Day” by Tien-Min Liao, embedded below, you don’t have to exercise your brain to visualize it. The fun yet informative video reveals exactly how we manage to shovel so much sugar into our mouths each day.

If the video convinces you to cut back on the white stuff—and we suspect it might—be sure to pick up some of our favorite low-sugar snacks. They’re all sure to satisfy your sweet tooth without sending your blood sugar levels on a rollercoaster ride.
