Ben & Jerry's Is Launching Sunflower Butter-Based Flavors
Ben & Jerry's is known for churning out some impressive pints of ice cream, but never before have they tackled something quite like this: the brand just released a sunflower butter-based, non-dairy frozen dessert.
As if a partnership with the nation's favorite streaming service—which brought us Netflix and Chilll'd, a mouth-watering combination of pretzels, peanut butter, and fudge brownies—wasn't enough of a treat to start the new year on a deliciously high note, Ben & Jerry's revealed yet another sweet surprise. Today, the brand announced the launch of three all-new flavors. What they share in common? They're 100 percent nut-free.
Peanuts and tree nuts, which include almonds and cashews, are among the top five most common food allergies in adults, according to a study published in the journal, JAMA Network. Thanks to Ben & Jerry's latest innovation, people with legume and nut allergies alike can enjoy the same creamy texture associated with nut butters, but instead with sunflower butter.
The ice cream company that's renowned for its extra chunky ingredients made its first allergen-friendly swap back in 2016 when signature recipes were revisited and reformulated into non-dairy flavors. Swapping out cow's milk for almond milk allowed customers who were sensitive or allergic to dairy, or followed a plant-based lifestyle, to enjoy beloved classics like Cherry Garcia, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Half-Baked. By adding seed-based flavors to the portfolio, Ben & Jerry's secured its spot as the first national ice cream brand on the market to use the nut butter alternative in non-dairy desserts.
The new line of ice cream is made from a combination of sunflower milk, coconut oil, and pea protein, and each flavor is loaded with all the swirls and chunks Ben & Jerry's is known for. The burnt caramel ice cream in the Crème Brûlée Cookie flavor, for example, features pieces of brown sugar cookie and is embellished with a salted caramel swirl.
The "Milk" & Cookies flavor, on the other hand, is perfect for any plant-based cookie monster: it packs a pleasant crunch between the pieces of both chocolate chip and chocolate sandwich cookies. The cookie bits are folded within the smooth vanilla ice cream and interweaved with a chocolate cookie swirl.
Mint Chocolate Cookie completes the trio. The sunflower butter spin on this Ben & Jerry's classic allows all types of eaters to enjoy the flavor that best mimics the Girl Scout Cookie you can never just buy a single box of.
So, is your mouth watering yet? If so, you'll appreciate this news. Each one of these new flavors can be scooped up from grocery shelves across the U.S. and in Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops starting today.
