Skip the sugary donut and prep a batch of these scones for your mornings instead!

Picking up a donut with your morning coffee seems pretty easy, right? Well, if you grab a Maple Creme Stick donut from Dunkin', you're consuming 34 grams of sugar in one sitting—which is already 68 percent of your daily value! Plus, with whatever coffee drink you order, that's a lot of sugar to consume so early in the morning. What if we told you we can make grabbing breakfast just as easy in the morning and slash that sugar count at the same time? Insert our low-sugar cranberry orange scones!

Each cranberry orange scone only has 8 grams of sugar in it—seriously, that's it! To put this in perspective, 8 grams of sugar is less than most of the flavored Greek yogurt you pick up at the grocery store, and just over a quarter of the sugar count in that Maple Creme Stick.

Not only that, but the sugar count in this recipe is coming from natural sweeteners. Instead of using granulated sugar, this recipe relies on honey and dried cranberries to give it that touch of sweetness you're craving.

Bake these cranberry orange scones on the weekend while you meal prep, and your mornings are as easy as grab-and-go—but without waiting on that long line at the coffee shop! You can save even more money by making your own cup of coffee at home and take it in your favorite coffee tumbler.

Makes 8 servings

Ingredients

Zest of 1 orange
2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold
1 egg
2 Tbsp honey
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 cup heavy cream
¼ cup dried cranberries

How to Make It

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, add the orange zest, flour, and baking soda. Mix together with a fork.
  3. Grate the cold butter using a cheese grater. Add to the bowl of dry ingredients and mix again with your fork, working the butter into the flour.
  4. In a stand mixer (or a large bowl with a whisk), whisk together the egg, honey, vanilla extract, and heavy cream for 30 seconds.
  5. Add in the flour to the wet ingredients and mix to form a dough. The dough will stick together like cookie dough, so if you don't have a stand mixer, mix the dough with a rubber spatula or clean hands.
  6. Sprinkle in the dried cranberries and mix into the dough.
  7. Move the scone dough to a floured surface. Form the dough into a flat circle.
  8. Using a knife or a pizza cutter, slice the dough into 8 slices.
  9. Place the scones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  10. Put the baking sheet of scones in the fridge for 15 minutes.
  11. After chilling, bake the scones for 18-20 minutes.
  12. Remove the scones to a cooling rack to cool (they may get darker on the bottom if you leave them on the pan).
