No Peeps For Easter? Coronavirus Ends Production of Seasonal Confection

The maker of the popular Easter candy is ending production over COVID-19 concerns.
Peeps candy

The coronavirus pandemic appears to have taken another victim: Peeps marshmallow candies.

Just Born Quality Confections is the Pennsylvania-based business behind the seasonal confection that ends up in so many Easter baskets, but due to concerns over the safety of their workers during the Covid-19 outbreak, they are temporarily suspending production at facilities in Philadephia and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Just Born Quality Confections also produces other name-brand candies such as Mike and Ike, Hot Tamales and Goldenberg Peanut Chews, the production of which is suspended as well.

Peeps are the marshmallow candies that come in the form of chicks and rabbits and definitely elicit a "love 'em or hate 'em" reaction. They are fairly ubiquitous during the Easter season, as many parents fill their children's Easter baskets with the marshmallow candies.

This year, however, it appears that there will be a shortage of Peeps. If the supply is low and demand stays high, the price of Peeps might be the next grocery item we will see being hoarded (God help us!)

As a third generation family owned business since 1923, the well-being of our associates, community, customers and business partners is of the utmost importance to us.

In response to the rapidly evolving COVID-19 situation, we are temporarily suspending production at our facilities in Bethlehem and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, effective no later than 3/25/20 at 6:30am through at least 4/7/20. Our PEEPS & Company® Store in Center Valley, Pennsylvania closed 3/17/20 and will remain closed through at least 4/7/20. Most of our office associates have been working remotely since 3/18/20 but now all associates will work from home through at least 4/7/20. All associates will continue to be paid throughout this time period. We will take this opportunity to further clean and sanitize our production facilities, offices and corporate headquarters.

Our internal task force for COVID-19 continues to regularly monitor the domestic and worldwide impact of the virus and is following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), local and state health and government authorities and the World Health Organization.

All of our PEEPS® have been produced and shipped to retailers for this upcoming Easter season. We do have inventory of MIKE AND IKE®, HOT TAMALES® and GOLDENBERG'S® PEANUT CHEWS® for the short term but may experience out of stocks on several individual items. We will continue to work with our retail partners to ensure that the fans of our brands can continue to enjoy them during this challenging time.
