Dr. Fauci Warns 40 States of COVID Outbreaks
The numbers are startling. "The US is adding an average of more than 74,000 new Covid-19 cases to the national total every day—a record high in a pandemic that experts say is likely to worsen," reports CNN. "The seven-day average is part of a fall surge that has brought the national case count to more than 8.8 million, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Four of the five highest number of cases in a single day were recorded in the last seven days, with the top two reported on Friday and Saturday. And 41 states are reporting at least 10% more cases compared to the week before." Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, sounded the alarm in an online Q&A with Chicago Ideas on Wednesday night. Dr. Fauci Says We "Are Not in a Good Position"
Dr. Fauci was asked about the rising numbers. "We certainly are not in a good position because when we had the original major surge that was dominated predominantly in the Northeast corridor with the new metropolitan area, and then it came back down there, but then other cities like Chicago and new Orleans and Philadelphia and others, we never got back down to a baseline that was a low acceptable baseline," he said. "And then when we try to so-called open up the country and open up the economy, we put forth a group of guidelines, which were not consistently followed from state to state. And when that happened, we started to see surges. Generally that started off in the Southern states, Florida, Texas, Georgia, Arizona, southern California, to bring up the baseline, which was 20,000, which is extremely high all the way up to about 70,000, came back down again to around 40,000 and got stuck there for at least several weeks to a month."
Now the virus is raging in Middle America. "Then the Heartland, the middle part of the country and the Northwest of the country started to have an acceleration. And the baseline of daily cases came back up again to the point that last Friday, they went 83,000 cases in a single day. And if you look at the map now of the country, we're seeing more than 30 States, closer to 40 States that are showing upticks in the number of cases."
Among the states and territories seeing an alarming rise in cases—enough that New York State, for example, asks visitors from most of them to be quarantined:
- New Jersey
- New Mexico
- North Carolina
- North Dakota
- Puerto Rico
- Rhode Island
- South Carolina
- South Dakota
- West Virginia
Why Cases are Rising Across America
"There are a number of complicated reasons why that's the case," said Fauci. "One, we never got down to a manageable baseline. So we have so much community spread that even the classic maneuvers like contact tracing don't work very well. And then when you look at what we're doing the five or so, what I considered staple type of common denominators—universal wearing of masks, distancing from a person six feet or more avoiding crowds in congregate settings, doing things outdoors, much more than indoors and washing your hands frequently—if you look across the country that is not been uniformly done. So now as we're entering the cooler months in the middle of the fall and soon the cold ones of the winter, we're in a very bad position. When you think about where we're going, because the trajectory is going up and then compound that with the holiday season coming, we have to do something different because we are clearly going in the wrong direction."
