Dr. Fauci's Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID
You can catch COVID-19 anywhere — from the comfort of your own home to anywhere outside of the house. However, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, you are more likely to catch it in some places than others. During the National Academy of Medicine's virtual event, "Confronting Urgent Threats to Human Health & Society: Covid-19 and Climate Change," the key member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force discussed the most risky places to go during the pandemic — and some of them may shock you. According to Dr. Fauci, the "most common" way the virus is spread is amongst "household contacts."
Aside from household spread, the next common method is in "congregate settings, particularly when it's closed." The first he brought up as an example, where cruise ships, where the virus spread rapidly during the beginning of the pandemic.
Nursing homes are another location where the virus has spread rapidly. Over the last several months there have been a number of outbreaks at nursing homes across the country, and many deaths as a result of them.
Indoor Singing Functions
Due to the fact that COVID-19 is primarily spread via respiratory droplets—either directly person-to-person or airborne— can be easily spread while singing. He mentions the "now famous Skagit County Washington spread in a super spreader event in a choir in the state of Washington where one infected individual infected 87% of the group," that occurred earlier in the year.
Family gatherings—such as the one recently profiled by the CDC involving a 13-year-old girl who infected nearly every family member with the virus during a gathering—as a common event that has superspreader potential.
There have been a number of superspreader events that have stemmed from church gatherings, reminds Dr. Fauci. Since speaking loudly, singing, shaking hands, and hugging are common practices at religious services, there are many opportunities for the virus to spread.
Dining out, especially indoors in restaurants that are "closed with poor ventilation" is incredibly risky, per Dr. Fauci.
Dr. Fauci mentioned a chart published by the CDC listing indoor gyms as an indoor space prone to COVID spread.
For many months, Dr. Fauci has been warning about the danger of going to a bar or nightclub during the pandemic, urging people to stay away from indoor watering holes, which make it virtually impossible to socially distance or wear a mask.
Dr. Fauci also mentioned prisons as a popular place for COVID spread. This is obviously due to the crowded conditions and difficulty separating potentially infected individuals from the rest of the community.
