This Sad, "Really Real" Story From Dr. Fauci Made Us Cry
For those on the front line who are witnessing the wrath of the coronavirus firsthand, the casualties are not just statistics but real people. While speaking with CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta during "COVID-19: Chasing Science to Save Lives," Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading infectious disease expert, told a heartbreaking story that humanizes the virus in a tragic way. Read on to hear his story, and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus.
Dr. Fauci Put a Human Face on the Shocking Statistics
"You know, the trouble is when you get to numbers that are so numbing — over 280,000 deaths, 14 to 15 million infections — it almost becomes a meaningless cold statistic to people unless they can make the connection between suffering human beings and those enormous numbers," Fauci explained.
"I mean, today, literally today, a few hours ago, I was across the lawn from the room I'm in now over at the NIH clinical center, making rounds on our patients, a couple of whom had COVID-19," he continued. "When you see a real patient in the room and you see the MRI and the CT scan, and you look at their pulmonary functions and the oxygen saturation, all of a sudden it becomes really real. And then that one person or two people that we saw on rounds today, multiplied to the 280,00-plus thousand people who've died."
Fauci admits that "the enormity of the problem, it just can actually overwhelm you" and that while "you don't want to overwhelm the general public" it's still important that they realize and "at least understand that you're dealing with real suffering and real disease and real loss in the form of death of loved ones."
"We can't walk away from that problem," he pointed out. "And it would seem to me that that has to be motivation enough for at least most of the people to adhere to the public health issues and the public health recommendations that we make as well as to seriously consider utilizing a highly efficacious vaccine."
Dr. Fauci Revealed He Lost Someone Close to His Family
When Dr. Gupta asked him if he had lost anyone close to him, he revealed that he had lost "a few" but relayed a tragic story about a young man who succumbed to the virus.
"My youngest daughter's boyfriend's brother is a 32-year-old young man athletic, healthy, who got COVID-19 and had one of the unusual complications of cardiomyopathy with an arrhythmia and died. So there you have a 32-year-old young man, otherwise healthy actually, quite athletic and strong who died," he revealed. "Very sad. It really saddens my daughter greatly."
As for yourself, follow Fauci's fundamentals and help end this surge, no matter where you live—wear a face mask, social distance, avoid large crowds, don't go indoors with people you're not sheltering with (especially in bars), practice good hand hygiene and to protect your life and the lives of others, and don't visit any of these 35 Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID.
