Kate Hudson Bets Big on Booze with Launch of Gluten-Free Vodka

The actress and Fabletics co-founder is expanding her business empire.

Kate Hudson. She's an accomplished actor, a bestselling author, a lifestyle guru, a fashion designer, and, as of this week, a… liquor company executive?

It's true. In an Instagram post, the Almost Famous star stirred and shook the spirits biz by announcing that she was launching a new brand, called King St. Vodka.

"After a particularly long day, I decided to host an impromptu cocktail party with my closest friends," she wrote. "As I prepared to whip up a batch of dirty vodka martinis, I surveyed my bar, but I wasn't 100 percent happy with my options. Then I wondered, 'Are any of these vodkas founded by women?' I did some research. They weren't. So, I decided to make my own just the way I like it!"

Hudson isn't the first A-lister to put her star power behind a liquor brand. (George Clooney founded Casamigos tequila, Ryan Reynolds owns Aviation gin, and everyone in Hollywood seems to have a wine label.) But she's definitely the first to launch a liquor brand with a supposedly healthy bent. King St. Vodka is being marketed as gluten-free. And unlike, say, Svedka or Smirnoff, it's made with pH-balanced alkaline water and produced in small batches at a Santa Barbara distillery.

King St. Vodka—which Hudson named after the street in Manhattan where she used to live—is just the latest addition to her growing portfolio of healthy living brands. In 2013, she debuted Fabletics, a glossy "athleisure" subscription service with more than a million members. She also has two New York Times bestselling books under her belt: 2016's Pretty Happy: Healthy Ways to Love Your Body and 2017's Pretty Fun: Creating and Celebrating a Lifetime of Tradition.

A launch date hasn't been announced yet, but King St. Vodka will first be available in California, before expanding to Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island. Perhaps the best news for vodka drinkers is the price tag. King St. Vodka will be priced at $24.99 for a 750ml bottle. (For comparison, a same-sized bottle of Grey Goose goes for $32.99.)

"The creative side of me thought it would be a fun challenge to develop a vodka for my palate, and in a beautiful package that I would love to have on my bar and share with friends," Hudson said in a press release. "The businessperson in me is now looking forward to the challenge of building a brand in an entirely new industry."
