More Than 70% of Shoppers Have This Food Fear About Coronavirus

Food security is top of mind amid the pandemic, a new study reveals.

Consumers are as concerned about food safety and security as they are about other key worldwide issues, including climate change, pollution, and poverty, a new study conducted by Mars Global Food Safety Center reveals.

Seventy-one percent of respondents fear that coronavirus will have a negative impact on global food access. Some 73% of respondents also believe that coronavirus will affect the viability of the global supply chain. The study surveyed 1,754 people from China, the U.K., and the U.S. (Related: 8 Grocery Items That May Soon Be in Short Supply)

"New food safety threats, like those posed by COVID-19, are constantly emerging through a combination of factors including global warming, increased globalization of trade, as well as changes in agriculture practices and food production," David Crean, Mars chief science officer and vice president of corporate R&D, said in a statement.

Food insecurity rates have indeed increased in many countries as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Disruptions in domestic food supply chains and other interferences within food production are largely attributable to this spike. The loss of stable income has also impacted families' access to nutritious food across the globe, especially as the price of some common groceries has increased.

As for food safety, 52% of respondents say this subject is a top-three global issue. More specifically, 60% of those surveyed worry around food being safe from toxins, as well as bacteria. In addition, 58% say they are concerned about food fraud. Instances of food fraud include altered pricing, deceptive labeling on food packaging, and a lack of food purity. Mars Global Food Safety Center concludes that individuals between the ages of 18 and 34, characterized as the "rising generation," are especially attuned to food safety through technology and an increasingly globalized economy.
