These Grocery Chains Are Offering Major Discounts on Thanksgiving Staples

Some nationwide retailers are ignoring inflation to make the holidays easier on your wallet.

As grocery prices continue to rise amid inflation, the thought of shopping for a large Thanksgiving dinner can be overwhelming. In fact, according to CPG market researcher IRI, a traditional Thanksgiving meal is estimated to cost 13.5% more this year compared to 2021.

Luckily, shoppers can have some peace of mind knowing that several supermarkets are trying to alleviate the strain on their wallets.

America's #1 Thanksgiving Item Is Facing an Additional Price Increase, Experts Say

"This year, consumers are planning further ahead for Thanksgiving than ever before, picking up staple items as they see promotions that fit within their budgets," Alastair Steel, executive for IRI client engagement, said in a statement.

To that end, here's a look at the discounts you can expect to see from three different grocery chains this holiday season.

Staying true to its slogan—"Save Money, Live Better"—Walmart is "removing inflation" on baskets of Thanksgiving items by selling them at last year's prices. The baskets, which feature both recipe essentials and ready-to-eat products, can be purchased from now until December 26, so you can rack up the savings for your other holiday meals, too.

Just like last year, customers will be able to buy their turkey for under $1 per pound. And as a bonus, they'll now have access to an even greater selection of "easier-to-manage-roasts" and grab-and-go meal options, which include ready-to-make side dishes and freshly baked desserts.

Walmart isn't the only retailer going back in time when pricing its Thanksgiving products. On Nov. 1, Aldi announced it will be launching its "Thanksgiving Price Rewind." This deal will keep holiday meal essentials at their 2019 price points, allowing shoppers to save up to 30% on items like appetizers, desserts, sides, and beverages.

Just keep an eye out for a red circle icon in local ads and Aldi stores, as this will mark the products applicable to the deal. The promotion will be available both online and in-store until November 29, so you can keep the festivities going past Turkey Day.

Lidl

Wouldn't it be great if you could pick up all of the Thanksgiving staples for less than $30? That's where Lidl comes in. The German grocer is, once again, selling its Thanksgiving basket, which can feed up to 10 people.

The holiday deal includes a 13-pound frozen turkey, baby carrots, sweet peas, turkey stuffing mix, one whole celery stalk, sweet potatoes, Hawaiian sweet rolls, fresh cranberries, one gallon of whole milk, heavy whipping cream, pumpkin pie mix, and two pie crusts. One of the main selling points of this promotion is the frozen turkey, which is available through Lidl's free-to-use loyalty program, myLidl. The bird is priced at 49 cents per pound—$1.50 less than the national average, according to Lidl.

Available while supplies last, the basket was modeled after items selected by the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) for its annual Thanksgiving Dinner Cost Survey.

Correction: Nov. 4, 2022

An earlier version of this article stated that Lidl's Thanksgiving basket items could be purchased as a bundle. The items can be purchased individually in their usual store locations.
