This Is America’s Most Hated Pizza Topping, According to Data
As anyone who's ever decided to ordered pizza at a party knows, people have strong opinions about pizza toppings. Just asking the room, "What toppings should we get?" can lead to some pretty major disagreements. Vegetarians aren't going to be thrilled about getting the meat lover's pizza, while others might gag at the thought of putting anything green on their slice.
So what is, objectively, the worst pizza topping? Research data and analytics group YouGov has settled the debate once and for all. According to a survey of over 6,000 adults, America's least favorite pizza topping is anchovy. (Related: McDonald’s Is Making These 8 Major Upgrades.)
Given how reviled anchovies are, it's a miracle they're still so widely available at pizza joints across the country. More than half of all respondents (61%) said they disliked this fishy topping. A close second on the most hated list, with 52% of votes, was eggplant, followed by artichokes, broccoli, and pineapple. Additionally, it turns out that plain is not a very popular choice either—only 3% of those surveyed said they preferred pizza without toppings.
However, this dislike for anchovies on a pizza may be generational. Data showed that fewer than half of respondents ages 18-24 said they disliked anchovies, compared to almost 70% of those over 54.
If anchovy is still available at your local pizzeria, despite all the hate, there must be a sizable share of anchovy die-hards, right? Nope! Only 8% of respondents said they actually enjoy the topping. Even fewer people reported liking eggplant—just 6%.
So what should you order when ordering for a crowd? If you're ordering based on the most popular toppings, rather than, say, health considerations or ethical concerns, you're best off going with pepperoni. It's the most loved option, enjoyed by 64% of those surveyed. Sausage came in a close second, enjoyed by 56%. Other popular picks included mushrooms, extra cheese, and onions.
