Dr. Fauci Says He Wants You to Know There's a "Light at the End of the Tunnel"
Dr. Fauci's answer was both hopeful and also contained a directive. "I want them to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel, particularly that we have multiple, highly efficacious vaccines," he told Murillo. "Now is not the time to pull back on public health measures. It is entirely understandable."
In states like Texas and Mississippi, governors have rolled back restrictions, opening up businesses to "100%" and rolling back mask mandates, to stoke the local economies and address COVID fatigue. "I feel it myself," said Fauci of the push. "You want to get back to some form of normality that will come relatively soon." How soon? "You know, I can't give you an exact month date," said Fauci, "but the better we do with suppressing the virus, the quicker we'll get back to normal. What we don't want to do is to prematurely jump the gun and throw aside all public health measures, because we feel the stress and the strain of wanting to get back to normal. It will occur. We will get back to normal. You can guarantee that we will do it more quickly, the more quickly and expeditiously we vaccinate people. And the more we continue to abide by public health measures until the level of virus is so low. It is no longer a threat."
