With the recent news that a new coronavirus variant—much more infectious than those previous—has been spreading in the United Kingdom, the world is on high alert. In fact, many states have taken immediate action, restricting travel from the U.K. in hopes that the mutated virus will not make its way across borders. Some people worry that unless we take action, it will make its way to the United States.

However, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, it is incredibly likely that it is already here and circulating. The Coronavirus is Likely "Already Here," Says Fauci

During an interview with Good Morning America, Fauci explained that "It's certainly possible" that the variant is here. "I mean when you have this amount of spread within a place like the UK, that you really need to assume that it's here already, and certainly is not the dominant strain, but I would not be surprised at all if it is already here," he said.

However, Dr. Fauci does not recommend banning travel from the UK, calling travel bans "really rather draconian things to do." Instead, he agrees with New York Governor Andrew Cuomo that individuals should be tested for COVID before boarding a plane to the United States, revealing that it is "under active discussion."

The Governor of New York is already going to do that, or is "already doing that," he revealed. "That's a big difference than just completely shutting off and banning travel completely, which is really a rather dramatic step. So that's not really in the cards right now, but I wouldn't be surprised if the requirement of testing is something that is being actively considered right now."

He also suggested that we need to confirm whether or not it is actually here. "I think one of the important things that we need to do is to actually do surveillance here and find out — it might already be here," he added. "I doubt if it's the prevalent strain here, but as the governor said, it is, it is entirely conceivable that it's already here."
