With coronavirus cases falling but new, more transmissible mutations rising (the latest was discovered in New York), we're at a key point of the pandemic. And it's up to us to stop it, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He appeared last night on CNN with Chris Cuomo to discuss the best way to stay safe from these dangerous mutations, arguing in favor of you getting the vaccine—no matter which brand—now, don't delay. Dr. Fauci Says Get Whichever Vaccine You Can ASAP to Stop the Mutations

The South African variant in particular has proven it might be able to sneak its way past a vaccine. Cuomo asked Fauci: "What do you say to people who say, you know what, I'm going to wait because…..I got the vaccine, it wouldn't work against these new variants. I'll wait. So what do you say to them and to the people who did get the version that's out right now about what the variants may mean for them?"

"Well, I mean, I would say what they're thinking exactly opposite of what they should be doing for the following reason," said Dr. Fauci. "When you get, for example, the Moderna or the Pfizer,—and we'll probably see the same thing with the J and J—when you get that prime followed by a boost, the difference is a tenfold increase in the neutralizing antibody." He said the South African variant "that actually diminishes the impact and the effect of the antibodies that are induced by the vaccine—when you get enough of those antibodies at a higher height, even if it diminishes it by the variant, you still have enough cushion to protect you against the variant."

"So," Fauci continued, "the higher your titer of antibody to the vaccine, the better off you are about protecting yourself against serious disease, hospitalization, and death from the variants. So the more people that get vaccinated, the better off you are, the higher your titer of antibody, the better off you are."

"The best way to prevent the emergence of further variance is to stop the replication of the virus," he finished. "Viruses don't mutate unless they're spreading. If you could stop their spread, you have two things that are in your favor. One: less people get infected. And two: You give the virus less of a chance to mutate."

How to Stay Safe During This Pandemic

"Emerging of variants will occur," Fauci said on Today Thursday. "The trick is, when they do occur, to prevent them from spreading." So follow Fauci's fundamentals and help end this pandemic, no matter where you live—wear a face mask that fits snugly and is double layered, don't travel, social distance, avoid large crowds, don't go indoors with people you're not sheltering with (especially in bars), practice good hand hygiene, get vaccinated when it becomes available to you, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don't visit any of these 35 Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID.
