Dr. Fauci Just Said These States in Trouble
The summer coronavirus surge is over but now we find ourselves in a "winter wave," as cases rise before the holidays have even started. How can you stay safe? Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, appeared today on MSNBC's Morning Joe to share ways you can keep COVID away—and he mentioned where COVID cases as rising fastest. Dr. Fauci Said We May Have Another Surge Unless…
Cases are raging in Europe. Is that a preview of what might happen here? "It could be, if we don't do what I've been talking about for some time now we have within our capability, the ability to make that not happen," said Dr. Fauci. "So when you are looking at, in Europe, particularly some of the more Eastern European countries, they were much less vaccinated than some of the rest in Europe and the UK, but notwithstanding that it was still breakthrough infections because they were pulling back on mitigation. They were understandably trying to open up the economy and say, okay, you don't have to wear a mask. You can go indoors, you can do these things. You don't want to pull back prematurely. You can do things now that when you're vaccinated that we couldn't do before, but you can't just say it's all over, that's it, no more masks. 'We're going to just walk away from this and make believe it's not happening'—that's what's going on in those European countries. So we've got to be careful. We've got to continue to vaccinate people. And now that we know that boosters really, really help, if you're 18 and older, and you've been vaccinated with either Moderna or Pfizer, six months ago for J&J two months ago, or more go get boosted, please, it really does help."
Dr. Fauci Said Here are the States in Trouble
"With regard to the geographic, you know, remember we were hot in the South for a while. And then now, we're getting into the cold, the places that are getting cold or sooner, which are in the Northern part of the country, and in certain places … in the North and Northeast, which was cooler from the standpoint of hot, signifying a number of infections, but starting to see that. But now, if you look at the map, it's scattered all over, particularly as people now go more indoors rather than outdoors, because of the cold weather." Virus expert Dr. Michael Osterholm has noted cases are going up in Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, New Hampshire, Vermont and these states are "lighting up": Maine, Rhode Island, Delaware, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey .
Dr. Fauci Said Here's Who is Getting Sickest
What percentage of people who are unvaccinated are in the ICU wards? "The overwhelming majority," said Dr. Fauci. "If you look at the interviews of nurses and ICU physicians, obviously because somebody people get vaccinated and because not vaccinated is the vaccination is not 100% effective. You will going to see individuals who are vaccinated, get breakthrough infection, some of which will get hospitalized. And very few of which will die. But if you compare vaccinated versus unvaccinated, the people who were in the hospital, the people were in the ICU and the people who die are overwhelmingly, weighted towards the unvaccinated, that's been that way all along. And it's still that way. No doubt about that."
Dr. Fauci Said Here's How to Stay Safe During the Holidays
"We have tools at our disposal," said Dr. Fauci. "That is really very important and that's vaccines." He touted boosters for everyone over 18. "The data are really striking in the sense that the increase in protection you get from a boost over and above the original vaccination is substantial. We're seeing that a suggestion of it here, the Israelis have just reported that they are seeing a dramatic enhancement of the protection. So if you're vaccinated and if you are eligible to be boosted and get boosted, you can look forward to a holiday with your family, with the usual precautions. When you're outside, going to an indoor congregate setting where you don't know the people, whether or not they're vaccinated, then you should be wearing a mask when you travel and you were in a crowded airport. I mean, in the airplanes, you have to wear a mask to be on a plane, but when you're in a food court, be careful. There's no reason why we can't enjoy the holiday with our families, particularly now that so many people are vaccinated. For the unvaccinated. I say, please, you know, there are 60 million people or so who are eligible to be vaccinated who are not vaccinated. Those are the ones that are significantly more vulnerable."
Dr. Fauci Said the Boosters Help Protect You From Delta
Delta is still raging. "99 plus percent of the isolates in this country is Delta," said Dr. Fauci. "So that's for sure. That's not a doubt. The interesting thing is that the data on how well the boosters protect, if you look at the antibody levels, namely those proteins in your body, that when you get boosted and when you get vaccinated, these protective proteins go up, they go up significantly higher, following a boost than they do following the initial vaccination and data. That's just coming out from Israel says right now, unequivocally that if you get boosted the protection against infection, severe disease, or what have you is significantly better following the boost, then the peak protection following the two doses, it just argues so much more favorably. If you're vaccinated, get boosted, if you're unvaccinated, get vaccinated and then get a boost, it really does protect much, much better."
