Dr. Fauci Just Issued This Urgent Warning

The Delta variant is hurting our children. Use precaution even if vaccinated, Fauci warns.

If you are vaccinated, you may feel impervious to COVID-19. But not only are you not fully protected, as breakthrough infections are possible, but the new Delta variant threatens to prolong the pandemic—and possibly put in harm's way people you love, or innocent, unvaccinated children. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, appeared on CNN last night opposite Don Lemon to sound an alarm. Read on for 5 essential, life-saving pieces of advice—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You Have "Long" COVID and May Not Even Know It.

Dr. Fauci Warned You Can Get Infected After Vaccination

Dr. Fauci said it was possible to get infected after vaccination and pass this infection along to your kids. "It is possible that you will see people who are infected get breakthrough infections despite the fact that they're vaccinated in general. When you have a breakthrough infection with a vaccinated person, the level of virus in the nasopharynx is lower than if you have an asymptomatic infection in someone who's not vaccinated. We haven't formally proven yet how much diminution there is in the likelihood of transmitting it to someone else, including children. And that's one of the reasons why you've got to be careful when you're dealing with something like the Delta variant. You want to make sure that you get vaccinated. If your children are not old enough to get vaccinated, when they're out there in the community, they should be wearing a mask if they are too young to get vaccinated."

Dr. Fauci Warns He's Seeing Younger People and Kids Getting "Seriously Ill"

"Do people need to rethink the dangers of this virus for children now that this Delta variant is here and kids under 12 have no protection since they can't be vaccinated yet," asked Lemon. "Don, you hit it right on the head," said Dr. Fauci. "That's exactly what we need to be concerned about. We're seeing more and more younger people getting infected and even getting significantly ill. Still, the statistics tell you that it's much more likely for an elderly person or someone with an underlying disease to get seriously ill. But this virus infects young people. Clearly when you look at the infection rate among young people in a virus that we've been dealing with prior to the Delta, it looks like it's considerably more. One of the reasons for that is we know as a fact not conjecture, but as a fact that this virus spreads more efficiently from person to person and it also leads to more severe disease. So we're seeing more younger people, not only getting infected, but getting seriously ill."

Dr. Fauci Said It's Possible You Could Be Vaccinated and Spread Your COVID to Children

"That's possible," said Dr. Fauci. "We don't know that….I believe that what we're going to see is that vaccinated people who get a breakthrough infection, namely, they get infected, but they don't have any symptoms that the level of virus will be low enough in their nasopharynx, that it is unlikely that they would pass it on to someone else. But we haven't proven that yet. So I can't say that definitively."

Dr. Fauci Said Be Careful Where You Are

Lemon asked about schools and camps lifting mask mandates. "You've got to be careful because it depends on where you are," said Fauci. "It gets back to what we were saying before. If you are in an area where the viral dynamics are really high, you've got to be careful about pulling back masks. You really gotta be careful. If you're in an area where many of the people are vaccinated and the level of virus is very low, you can be much more flexible in not having children wearing masks."

Dr. Fauci Said These States are in Danger

Lemon mentioned "states like Alabama, Arkansas, my home state of Louisiana, Mississippi, Wyoming, that they have less than 35% of the population fully vaccinated." Dense outbreaks have been predicted in these states. Fauci agreed it's a problem. "That is something that we are very concerned about, when you have such a low level of vaccination superimposed upon a variant that has a high degree of efficiency of spread," he said. "What you are going to see among under-vaccinated regions, be they states, cities or counties, you're going to see these individual types of blips. It's almost like it's going to be two Americas. You're going to have areas where the vaccine rate is high, where there's more than 70% of the population has at least one dose, when you compare that with areas where you may have 35% of the people vaccinated, you clearly have a high risk of seeing these spikes in those selected areas. The thing that's so frustrating about this—is that this is entirely avoidable, entirely preventable. If you have been vaccinated, you diminish dramatically." So get vaccinated when it becomes available to you, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don't visit any of these 35 Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID.
