This New Plant-Based Chain Claims to Be the Next McDonald's

It has plans for a rapid national expansion.

Plant-based fast food is one of the quickest-growing concepts of the restaurant industry, with giants like Taco Bell and McDonald's jumping on board and announcing major partnerships with Beyond Meat. But one particular emerging plant-based chain is currently stealing the spotlight with a bold statement: that they're the next McDonald's.

Stalk & Spade, a highly-anticipated national fast-casual concept specializing in plant-based food, is opening its first restaurant in Minnesota next week. Starting on April 29, customers will be able to sample plant-based burgers and more at its inaugural location in Wayzata. Started by entrepreneur Steele Smiley (also the founder of Crisp & Green), the chain hopes to expand quickly nationwide in order to make affordable plant-based fast food available to mainstream America.

"I ultimately believe we'll be the McDonald's of this space," Smiley told Franchise Times. "It's fun to have that first-mover advantage. It's a game of speed, and I'm really good at speed. We're positioned to win."

So what's on the menu? All the standard grub you'd expect from a burger chain, but featuring plant-based meat made with a combination of peas, beets, rice, and a handful of other wholesome ingredients. Their burger offerings range from classic to signature, while fries come in regular and sweet potato varieties. Besides burgers, the chain also sells heat-packed chicken sandwiches, shakes, and ice cream cones with a plethora of customizable toppings.
