There's a bigger focus than ever on wellness, and a growing number of brands are at the forefront of that. Target has just announced a new product rollout that's very of-the-moment and quickly gaining big buzz, partly because of the budget-friendly price.

Target has announced the launch of Good & Gather Plant Based as a new arm of their popular Good & Gather brand. The new lineup includes 30 plant-based products—all under $8, but most under $5—such as non-dairy chocolate-flavored mousse dip, crispy chick'n tenders, savory buffalo-style cauliflower wings, cashew dips, and Caramel Vanilla Almondmilk Creamer.

Target says some of these items are already available, while others, such as salad dressings, will enter stores by the fall.

According to Rick Gomez, Target executive vice president and chief food and beverage officer, this launch was inspired by what customers want: "Guest demand for plant-based offerings is incredibly high and continues to grow," Gomez said. "Good & Gather Plant Based reinforces the brand's commitment to products that prioritize great taste and quality, with the value only Target can offer."

The Good & Gather brand overall is touted as their bestselling food and beverage owned brand that "has been a guest go-to" since its 2019 launch, reportedly generating over $2 billion in 2020. Meanwhile, U.S. plant-based spending in 2020 is said to have totaled $7 billion.

The retailer adds that Good & Gather Plant Based items have been "thoughtfully crafted by Target's internal team of food scientists and recipe developers"… but how nutritious are they, really?

To start, a one-cup serving of Good & Gather oat milk has the same fat content as Oatly with five grams, but Good & Gather has a quarter fewer carbs (12 grams, versus Oatly's 16) and sunflower oil, instead of the often controversial rapeseed oil that's in Oatly.

Meanwhile, a single 77 gram-serving of Good & Gather Plant Based Meatless Chick'n Tenders has:

  • seven grams of fat
  • 14 grams of carbohydrates
  • 11 grams of protein

For comparison, an 86-gram single serving of Morningstar Chik'n Nuggets has:

  • nine grams of fat
  • 20 grams of carbs
  • 12 grams of protein

And, an 84-gram serving of Perdue's chicken strips has:

  • seven fat grams
  • 13 grams of carbs
  • 14 grams of protein.

We also like Good & Gather's breading made of ingredients like quinoa and oats, with what appear to be a fewer number of chemicals listed in the nutrition facts overall when compared to Morningstar.

A two-tablespoon serving of the Good & Gather cashew dips and spreads also turns up about as expected, at 80 calories and around seven grams of fat, compared to the same serving size of Sabra classic hummus at 70 calories and five grams of fat.

All this to say that Target's Good & Gather Plant Based lineup could be good to gather and try out. For more, read up on the 10 Best American Cities for Beer, and these recent stories:
