This Beloved Pizza Chain Says These Are Its Two Most Popular Menu Items

Papa John's reveals which menu items are driving sales.

The pandemic has completely changed the way restaurants, both independently-owned ones and chains alike, operate. In order to stay in business, they've had to entirely restructure the way they serve customers as dining rooms remain closed in several cities. Establishments that are doing considerably well right now all have one thing in common: a strong delivery presence. And what's more delivery-friendly than a piping hot box of pizza?

Not all pizza chains have been doing exceptionally well during the pandemic, that is, except for Papa Johns. The pizza giant reported record-breaking sales in both March and April. Recently, Papa John's announced that same-store sales grew over 24% for North America sales in the period lasting between July 27 and August 23. The chain also saw a considerable jump in international sales, increasing by 6% in June to then 23% in the period that just ended. Papa John's attributes its immense success during these unprecedented times to recent innovations, primarily the Papadia (a hybrid of a flatbread pizza and sandwich) and the Shaquille O'Neal-branded Shaq-a-Roni, an extra-large pizza covered with extra pepperoni and extra cheese. Not to mention, for each Shaq-a-Roni pizza purchased, $1 is donated to the Papa John's Foundation to support COVID-19 relief.

"Papa John's sales, driven by product innovation, remained strong in August," said Papa John's president and CEO Rob Lynch, as quoted by Nation's Restaurant News. "As we have added new customers throughout 2020, our customer satisfaction and brand affinity scores also continue rising. Our international business gained further momentum in August too and continues to improve as more countries across the globe open back up for business."

Mobile ordering has also been a pivotal force behind the company's steady growth in sales, and it's expected to help the chain sustain the momentum into the fall.
