Health experts are still in the process of studying the short and long-term health symptoms, health complications, and damage that can occur as a result of both a mild and severe COVID-19 infection. Initially believed to be more of a respiratory infection, wreaking damage on the lungs primarily, we have come to understand that it can also devastate other organs, including the heart, brain, and vascular system.

Here are some of the scariest things that COVID can do to your body, according to a new analysis courtesy of Axios, and to get through this pandemic at your healthiest, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus.

Lungs: Pneumonia

In December 2019 when COVID-19 was first identified in Wuhan, China, it became immediately clear that the virus attacks the lungs in a major way. Many patients suffer from pneumonia as a result of the virus, which can damage air sacs in their lungs. As a result, their scar tissue gets majorly damaged and they can suffer from long-term breathing problems.

Heart: Myocarditis

Even those who suffer mild COVID-19 infections are suffering from heart damage as a result of the virus. A recent study out of Germany found that 78% of people who recovered from an infection were left with heart abnormalities at least two months later. In total 60% exhibited signs of myocarditis. Because the virus is so new, it still isn't clear whether the damage will undo itself or if it is permanent. However, previous research has identified that COVID-induced myocarditis has resulted in the sudden death of sufferers.

Vascular System: Blood Clotting

Another potentially life-threatening impact of the virus happens in the blood vessels. Blood clotting has been a common occurrence in those battling COVID-19 infections, which, if severe, can lead to a bunch of other vascular system related health complications including heart attack and stroke. An examination of autopsies from COVID victims revealed microclots in the lungs, while other studies have identified clotting in the heart, kidney and liver.

Neurological Symptoms: Stroke

As a result of blood clotting, strokes have become the most common neurological symptom of the virus — but not the only one. Even those suffering from mild infections are facing neurological complications. Benedict Michael, a neurologist at the University of Liverpool, UK, recently told Nature that "younger people without conventional risk factors"  are having strokes.
