The Secret Butter Trick That Will Absolutely Blow Your Mind

There's an easy way to soften butter without using the microwave.

Do you ever get that late-night hankering to bake? You know what I'm talking about: It's nearly midnight, and you're scouring through the pantry looking for those ingredients that can quickly satisfy your dessert cravings. Eggs, water, sugar, and flour are all classic baking staples, but no baking recipe is complete without this one ingredient: butter.

Butter is the key ingredient in many recipes because it provides the body and texture to baked goods that make them melt in your mouth. However, what happens when you realize that you only have a hard stick of butter that's been sitting in your refrigerator for weeks? The last thing you want to do is wait for the butter to soften because that takes way too long.

Luckily, you're not alone in this struggle. TikTok users @Margaritav24 and @RachellFish have shared their secret trick to getting the perfect softened butter in minutes, and we're going to share it with you.

Here's how to soften butter, straight from TikTok users:

  1. Fill a glass with (very) hot water.
  2. Pour the hot water out into the sink or into a pot to use again later if you want to be resourceful. (It might not make a lot of sense right now, but stay with us.)
  3. Put the glass over the butter. Get your stick of butter and stand it up vertically. Get the glass and place it over the stick of butter.
  4. Leave the butter covered for five minutes. In the meantime, you can measure out the rest of your ingredients and preheat the oven.
  5. Pick up the glass and find softened butter. After five minutes have passed, pick up the glass. The butter stick should now be soft enough that a knife can easily cut through it. If it's still not soft enough, you can repeat these steps a second time.
