These Two Serious Nationwide Food Recalls Were Just Announced

If you're thinking there's been an influx of food recalls lately, you aren't mistaken. It's not a new problem, though. Between 2013 and 2018, the number of food recalls went up 10%, TIME says. Since then there have been alerts issued for things like salad, chicken, and even pastries sold at grocery stores like Walmart and Costco.

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) just announced two new food recalls in the freezer section.
FSIS is a section of the USDA that is "responsible for ensuring that meat, poultry, Siluriformes, and eggs are safe and are properly labeled and packaged. It just alerted grocery shoppers of a recall for a popular frozen pizza and a chicken and vegetable frozen appetizer.
FSIS inspects food items but also fields consumer complaints, which is how the two recalls were discovered.

Nestle USA's DiGiorno Crispy Pan Crust Pepperoni Pizza is being recalled.
This popular frozen pizza is the subject of a recall because it "contains textured soy protein, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label," according to the FSIS alert. While it says it is a pepperoni pizza, it is actually a three-meat pizza and contains soy protein.
The pizza was shipped to grocery stores and distribution centers nationwide and has a "Best By" date of MAR2022 on the label.
"The problem was discovered after the firm received a consumer complaint that a three meat pizza was in a carton labeled as pepperoni pizza," the alert says. "There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider."
Over 33,000 pounds of raw, frozen chicken and vegetable potstickers are also being recalled.
Unlike the mislabeled DiGiorno recall, the 4.2-pound bags of Ling Ling Potstickers Chicken & Vegetable are being recalled because they may contain extraneous materials—specifically clear, flexible, and hard plastic, an alert says.
The bags have a "Best By" date of 22 OCT 2022 on the label and a lot code of 1911203. The problem was also discovered after customer complaints came in about the plastic. So far no reports of any injuries have surfaced. The recalled potstickers were sent to distribution centers in California and Washington and then sent to retail stores.
FSIS is concerned the two recalled items are in consumers' freezers.
When an item is part of a recall it is removed from grocery store shelves. But because both the pizza and the potstickers are frozen, FSIS says it is concerned that some of these items may be in consumers' freezers at home.
If one (or both) is in your kitchen, don't consume it. Instead, throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.
