The Best & Worst Chips in 2021—Ranked!
Potato chips, snack crisps, cheese puffs, tortilla chips—whatever you want to reach for come snack time—all have their pros and cons. The obvious pro is that they're delicious, full stop. However, they are a salty snack, which means some of those chips you love pack a lot of salt into each little crunchy bite.
"Simply made of potatoes, salt, and oil, chips are typically an 'empty calorie' food," says dietitian Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, LD, who also pointed out that in general, chips don't "offer much in the nutrition department." For the most part, a potato chip is simply potatoes, salt, and oil, and while a small ingredient list is often what someone eating healthy would like, that doesn't mean it's necessarily healthy.
That being said, like with just about any food, moderation is key. In fact, snacking on chips as a treat when you really want them can make them even more enjoyable and will satiate your hunger for them.
Though our ranking of chips from worst to best highlights the biggest brands and most readily available options, Manaker advises people to think outside the potato.
"Choosing a chip that contains some protein or fiber (or both!) will give your snack some extra staying power. This may mean choosing a chip that is made from something other than the classic potato or corn," she says. She also cautions against some labels, like "natural," and suggests grocery shoppers read each label to make an independent evaluation on whether or not it's the right snack for you.
We did a little bit of the work for you in deciding which chips are healthier than others. We mostly considered the sodium content, as it's such a concern for so many people. Keep in mind that The American Heart Association suggests adults not consume more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day. With that said, check out chips from the most popular brands, ranked from worst to best! Herr's Salt & Vinegar
The worst of the bunch, Herr's Salt & Vinegar chips are absolutely packed with sodium. Though they aren't loaded with calories or fat, they are higher in saturated fat than most of the other chips too. If you want a salt and vinegar chip, other brands have slightly healthier options.
Herr's Baby Back Ribs
We love that these chips have a little bit more protein than most of the chips on this list, however, they also have a lot more calories, sodium, saturated fat, and carbs, which makes the protein a bit of a moot point.
Herr's Old Bay
Considering Old Bay seasoning has salt in it, it's no surprise that an Old Bay-flavored chip would be high in sodium. These are really high, though, so eat these with caution and definitely in moderation.
Herr's Salt & Pepper
Herr's Salt & Pepper chips are—you guessed it—very salty. We expect some extra salt on a salt-flavored chip, but these are exceptionally high.
Herr's Kettle Cooked Salt & Pepper
A salt and pepper chip is no better than a salt and vinegar chip. This one, however, is a salt bomb. Though these aren't any higher than others in calories, fat, or carbs, they're so high in sodium that it'll throw a wrench into the rest of your healthy-eating day.
Herr's Fire Ridged Potato Chips
Another salt bomb from Herr's! Sure, the fat is lower and there's no sugar, but there's so much salt in these. There are healthier options for a spicy potato chip on this list.
Herr's Ragin Ranch
We love ranch flavoring as much as the next person, but we also know how salty it can be. So it just makes sense that these ranch-flavored chips have quite a bit of sodium in them.
Herr's Kettle Cooked Salt & Vinegar
In just 13 chips, you're getting 360 milligrams of sodium, which is quite a bit. And though 13 chips might be a serving size and might satisfy some people, if you want to eat more chips than that, you're creeping up into dangerously high sodium numbers.
Herr's Red Hot
Ouch, these chips have a lot of sodium in them. Though the other metrics aren't too elevated—which is surprising—the sodium level is high enough for these to be a problem.
Herr's Kettle Cooked Mesquite BBQ
Not only do these chips have quite a bit of sodium, but they're also packed with carbs. With one of the highest carb counts on this list, these delicious chips might be best left on the grocery store shelves.

Cheetos Puffs Flamin' Hot
Overall, Cheetos are not a great option when it comes to picking a healthy chip. They have quite a bit of sodium, as well as fat, saturated fat, and calories. We can forgive one elevated number, but when they all creep up, it starts to become a snack we don't recommend. These are Cheetos' worst option.
Herr's Kettle Cooked Jalapeño
There are better spicy options on this list, in terms of salt and carbs. These also have a bit more saturated fat than some others, so we don't necessarily recommend making this your go-to.
Fritos Chili Cheese
If you're a fan of Fritos Chili Cheese, we have bad news—they're kind of terrible. A 1-ounce serving has more than 300 milligrams of sodium, which is really high for a snack. Plus, they have a lot of fat and carbs, making them all-around not a great option.
Herr's Cheddar & Sour Cream
Herr's loves the salt content, so these cheddar and sour cream chips really pack it in. They're slightly lower in carbs, but the standard 2.5 grams of saturated fat that is in pretty much all their chips.
Pringles Buffalo Ranch
Why must ranch flavor be so salty? Perhaps that's why it's so delicious. Buffalo sauce is also notoriously salty, so it makes sense for these Pringles to have a lot of sodium in them, plus saturated fat.
While a ketchup chip is a fun novelty, these are full of sodium and saturated fat. You're better off opting for a tortilla chip with some chopped up tomatoes.
Herr's Baked Barbecue
Like so many other baked chips, these are high in carbs, but they're also high in sodium. If you're looking for something low in calories, these will suffice, but just take caution with the salt and carbs.
Cheetos Crunchy Cheddar Jalapeño
Cheetos' second worst option is the Crunchy Cheddar Jalapeño. They have quite a bit of salt, as well as fat. They're also unfortunately low in fiber.
Funyuns Flamin' Hot
Sorry to say Funyuns aren't great. While they are lower in fat and calories than many other chips, they're still high in sodium and carbs. So not the best option but not the worst. (But closer to worst than best.)
Herr's Kettle Cooked Cheddar Horseradish
The tangy horseradish flavor in these chips is incredibly satisfying but also incredibly salty. These are definitely a chip to be enjoyed in moderation.
Herr's BBQ Potato Chips
Unfortunately, Herr's BBQ Potato Chips are one of the worst options when it comes to that barbecue flavor. There isn't a ton of added sugar, but there's plenty of salt.
The plain Funyuns are a bit better than the flavored ones, with just a touch less sodium, but still not a great pick.
Doritos Spicy Sweet Chili
The worst Dorito flavor you can pick in terms of sodium is the Spicy Sweet Chili. They sure are delicious, but they pack a wallop of sodium and carbs.
You might think the fact that these snacks are puffed that there'd be a little less to them, but you'd be wrong. They're still high in sodium and fat, unfortunately.
Herr's Sour Cream and Onion
Of all the sour cream and onion chips, these are not the best. Not only do they have a lot of sodium, but they also have quite a bit of saturated fat.
Herr's Chickie's & Pete's Crabfries
If you want to eat these simply for the eccentricity of the flavor, then we support you. They are high in sodium, though, but not terrible in carbs.
Cape Cod Sweet & Spicy Jalapeño
If you're looking for a spicy chip, there are options on this list with far less sodium. While the calories, fat, and saturated fat are low, that sodium number is not really what you want to see in a snack.
Cheetos White Cheddar Bites
White cheddar adds a bit of extra flair compared to regular cheddar cheese, but in this case, it also adds some extra sodium.
Cheetos Crunchy Flamin' Hot Limón
All of that delicious Cheetos cheese is loaded with salt, even with the tangy limón flavor. This spicy flavor is on the top end of the Cheetos lineup—and not in a good way.
Herr's Grill Mates Montreal Steak
These tasty grilled chips are a fun summery treat, but watch out for the salt. The sodium is a little high, as is the saturated fat.
Pringles Parmesan & Roasted Garlic
Parmesan is deliciously salty—it's what makes it so good—but that also means it makes for a salty chip. You'll get a ton of flavor out of these Pringles but also quite a bit of sodium.
Herr's Stubb's Original BBQ
The iconic Stubb's flavor of these chips is so good that they're hard to resist. But the sodium and saturated fat are a bit unappealing.
Herr's Kettle Cooked Honey Sriracha
These sweet heat chips don't add a lot of calories to your day, but they do add quite a bit of sodium. If you must indulge in these, make sure to clear out some space in your day for this much sodium.
Herr's Kettle Cooked Sour Cream & Onion
Of Herr's sour cream and onion varieties, this kettle-cooked option is better, as it has slightly less sodium. It also has less saturated fat!
Cheetos Crunchy Flamin' Hot
There's more fat in these Cheetos than most of the other flavors, plus more sodium. We love Cheetos as much as the next person, but they're definitely a salty snack.
Cheetos Crunchy XXTRA Flamin' Hot
These Cheetos may be high in sodium, but they're not so bad in calories compared to other flavors. Plus they have no sugar (which is on par for Cheetos).
Cheetos Crunchy Cheese
The original Cheetos are one of your better options for a cheesy snack. They're still really high in sodium, but we understand the draw to a Cheeto. Just consider not eating these too often.
Ruffles Queso Cheese
The queso flavor in these chips bumps up the sodium quite a bit, along with the fat content. Though they are delicious, they're a bit on the salty side.
Cape Cod Sea Salt & Vinegar
These pesky salt-flavored chips almost always come with added sodium. They're delicious, but they're salty! These don't have too much fat and saturated fat, though, which is a good thing.
Doritos Dinamita Chile Limón
We love these chile lime Doritos, but they do have plenty of sodium, carbs, and saturated fat, which is a bummer. They should be enjoyed in moderation.
Lay's Kettle Cooked Reduced Fat Original
These may be called a reduced fat chip, but they're really not any better than any other "healthy" chips on this list. They're higher in calories and carbs—by a long shot—and still have saturated fat. One pro on these is that they have 3 grams of protein per serving.
Munchos Original Potato Crisps
Munchos has elevated fat and sodium, which isn't a great combination. Yes, they're a deliciously crispy chip, but one that you might be better off eating in small amounts.
Lay's Salt & Vinegar
When you have a salt and vinegar chip, the sodium level will inevitably be higher. If you want to indulge in a salt and vinegar chip, just keep an eye on your salt intake for the rest of the day.
Doritos 3D Crunch Corn Snacks Chili Cheese Nacho
These 3D Doritos have more sodium than the ranch flavor, plus they have plenty of carbs. The novelty of them is worth trying, but perhaps it's better to enjoy in moderation.
Herr's Baked Original
Herr's Baked Original chips are a bit of a conundrum. They're low in calories, fat, and saturated fat, but they're high in carbs (similar to other baked chips) and still have a decent amount of sodium. While the sodium level is low compared to other Herr's chips, it's not as low as some other brands.
Fritos Scoops Spicy Jalapeño
With the spice comes the salt, unfortunately. These are on the high end for sodium in Fritos, meaning you're better off with a plain variety.
The good thing about these chips is that they're made with real limes, which we love. However, they're high in sodium, which almost cancels out the positive point.
Lay's Dill Pickle
The eccentricity of these chips is definitely a plus. Who doesn't want to combine the flavors of a dill pickle with potatoes? These do have an elevated salt content but in moderation aren't terrible.
Fritos Flavor Twists Honey BBQ
It's always a good day when you can have a sweeter chip without too much extra sugar, which is just what you'll get with these Fritos.
Lay's Flamin' Hot Dill Pickle
The only thing better than a dill pickle chip is a hot dill pickle chip. These are a better sodium option than Lay's regular dill pickle chips—win!
Ruffles Lime & Jalapeño
This is Ruffles' highest salt content from its lineup, though all the chips are fairly similar on the nutrition label itself.
Cape Cod Waves Jalapeño Ranch
Though some spicy options aren't too bad, the addition of ranch flavor here bumps the sodium level up. You'll get a lot of flavor, but also a lot of salt.
Doritos Nacho Cheese
Your favorite classic Doritos have a lot of salt, sorry to say. They also have quite a bit of carbs, though they're pretty average compared to other Doritos.
Doritos Salsa Verde
This Dorito variety also isn't great either. It's pretty high in sodium and higher in carbs than most of the other Doritos options. The Tapatio flavor will be somewhat similar but with less carbs and sodium.
Pringles Rotisserie Chicken
We want to love these—they are chicken-flavored after all, but the salt and saturated fat makes it hard.
Doritos 3D Crunchy Flavored Corn Snacks Spicy Ranch
When choosing a 3D Dorito—which we support—the Spicy Ranch has less sodium than the nacho flavor by a little bit. It's also slightly less fat!
Though these Doritos are lower in calories, they're a little higher in sodium than other flavors, so it depends on which is more important to you. The sodium level isn't as high as many of these other chips, so we don't consider it a bad choice.
Herr's Baked Cheddar & Sour Cream
There are plenty of cheesy chips and snacks on this list that have less sodium than these. However, because these are baked, they're lower in calories and fat. With the high salt and carb content, though, it almost seems a shame to have the calories and fat be so low. If you're counting carbs or watching sodium, these aren't the best pick.
Herr's Kettle Cooked Original
For a kettle-cooked potato chip, these are on par with most brands. The elevated sodium content is thanks to how much salt is sticking to those delicious crunchy potatoes!
Doritos Flamin' Hot Limón
You'll get so much flavor from these Doritos—but also a good amount of carbs and sodium too. They aren't the worst, but they're far from the best.
Doritos Poppin' Jalapeño
These spicy Doritos are one of the higher-carb varieties, though the sodium and fat are on par with the rest of the choices.
Doritos Cool Ranch
You've got to love a Cool Ranch Dorito, but then you also have to deal with carbs. Cool Ranch is one of the two iconic Doritos flavors, and between this and Nacho Cheese, this is a better choice.
Doritos Flamin' Hot Nacho
On par with much of the Doritos lineup, the super spicy flavor is slightly high in sodium and carbs, but in the grand scheme of this list, it's one of the better choices.
Doritos Spicy Nacho
These are a pretty good spicy option! You'll get all the vibes of having actual nachos without all the carbs or salt.
Pringles Scorchin' Cheddar
Somehow, the Scorchin Cheddar Pringles ended up on the higher end of the sodium spectrum, perhaps because they're just so cheesy. The rest of the nutrition is pretty even-keeled for a Pringle.
Lay's Flamin' Hot
The Flamin' Hot chips might have a higher level of salt in them, but if you consider the extra water you might want to drink while eating them, it balances out a little bit. OK, so not totally, but you will probably need more water with these fiery chips.
Doritos Simply Organic Spicy White Cheddar
An organic option is Doritos' spicy white cheddar flavor. It has a list of organic ingredients, though, it's more loaded with salt than Doritos''other organic chips, making this a slightly worse choice.
Tostitos Salsa Verde
Tostitos' Salsa Verde flavor is a decent low-fat option, though it's more elevated in sodium. However, with this chip, you don't need anything extra, considering your salsa flavor is built right in!
Cape Cod Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper
This may be a salty chip, but it doesn't have a ton of extra sodium. Like all the Cape Cod chips, these also don't have a ton of fat or calories.
Doritos Blazin' Buffalo & Ranch
The beauty of these tasty chips is that they're buffalo flavored and ranch flavored without a ton of extra salt. That's definitely a win.
Kettle Brand Krinkle Cut Habanero Lime
We wish these spicy chips had less sodium, but at least they aren't as bad as some of the other fiery flavors on this list. Plus, the lime adds a refreshing twist.
Herr's Kettle Cooked Reduced Fat
This is definitely one of Herr's best chip options. It is, indeed, lower in fat than the other Herr's chips and lower in sodium as well. The calorie count is also not bad, so if you're a Herr's devotee, grab this one for a healthier snack.
Ruffles Flamin' Hot
The super hot Ruffles clock in at 11 grams of fat, which is slightly more than other hot potato chips here and slightly more than the rest of the Ruffles options.
Cape Cod Sour Cream & Onion
You wouldn't necessarily think sugar is an important ingredient in sour cream and onion chips, and yet there's sugar in these, which we don't love.
Lay's Kettle Cooked Sea Salt & Vinegar
We don't mind this salt and vinegar variety in terms of nutrition. The sodium level is on par with most potato chips here, and the fat is a little lower than many others. These will give you a flavorful crunch without the extra salt and fat.
Herr's Kettle Cooked Sweet Potato
This is your only sweet potato chip option on this list, so if that's what you're looking for, this is the only answer! Fortunately, the nutrition content on these is pretty good, with not a lot of calories or saturated fat.
As one of Doritos' lower-calorie options, the Tapatio flavor is actually quite good all around (as far as the Doritos family goes). It's on the lower end of the sodium, as well as carbs. While not the best chip you can choose from, it is one of the best Doritos.
Lay's Baked Original Potato Crisps
Here's the thing with Baked Lay's. While they are lower in fat and calories, they're still pretty high in sodium and exceptionally high in carbs (compared to other options). Depending on what metric you're sticking to more heavily—carbs or calories—these may not be the best pick.
Doritos Taco Flavor
The appeal of these chips is really the bag (seriously!), but they're also not too bad of a choice on the nutrition label. They're lower in fat than many of the chips on this list, as well.
Fritos Flamin' Hot
These Fritos are a little higher in fat than some of the other chips on this list, but nutritionally, we don't think these are a bad pick.
Pringles The Original
Pringles are a little higher in saturated fat than some of the other chips on this list but are otherwise very, very similar. The ingredient labels have a few more items, so if you're looking for a "cleaner" chip, look elsewhere.
Fritos Original Corn Chips
Fritos are low in sugar, which is great and expected from a corn chip. The sodium level isn't awful compared to the rest of this list, plus each serving has 2 grams of protein. Considering a serving is 32 chips, we actually think this is a pretty decent option.
Doritos Simply Organic White Cheddar
The numbers on the nutrition label aren't any better or worse here than other Doritos, but if you want an organic option, this is a great choice. It's lower in sodium than Doritos' other organic chip, and has a full list of organic ingredients.
Most of the Tostitos varieties are lower in sodium than the Habanero flavor, but compared to all the potato chips on this list, these are still a solidly healthy choice.
Lay's Baked BBQ Flavored Potato Crisps
Again, high in carbs, plus high in sugar because of the barbecue flavor. It's up to you if you think the carbs are worth it for the lower-calorie and lower-fat choice.
Lay's Cheddar Jalapeño
Lay's Cheddar Jalapeño chips creep up a little bit in sodium, though still aren't bad. These give you a little more flavor than a plain chip without too much extra fat, saturated fat, or carbs.
Kettle Brand Sea Salt & Vinegar
The sea salt in these chips adds a nice punch of flavor without elevating the sodium content too high. Plus, these chips have 2 grams of fiber and protein, which is a nice bonus.
Herr's Ridged Potato Chips
All of Herr's plain potato chips are similar in the nutrition department. The sodium is a little higher than some other brands, but not by too much.
Herr's Crisp 'N Tasty
The Crisp 'N Tasty chips have the same nutritional info as the plain chips, which gives you the freedom to choose whatever chip shape you like!
Herr's Ripple Potato Chips
And to round out this trio, the ripple chips are also exactly the same. Whether you like your chips ridged, rippled, or just crispy is up to you.
Ruffles Double Crunch Hot Wings
These also pack in a lot of flavor without adding a ton of extra salt, which isn't always easy or successful. They have a slightly higher number of calories than other options, but not too bad.
Tostitos Hint of Spicy Queso
If you're looking to add a little bit of spice, these aren't a bad option. Most of the spicy chips on this list are pretty comparable but with this one you also get the cheesy flavor.
Lay's Chesapeake Bay Crab Spice
Another unique and delicious flavor from Lay's, the Chesapeake Bay Crab Spice will give you all the vibes of a seafood dinner by the water. Plus, these chips have a pretty level nutrition label compared to the rest of these chips.
Pringles Cheddar Cheese
There isn't too much variation with Pringles nutrition—where you really see the difference is the flavor. This is not a bad thing if you like all the flavors and want to change it up often! These cheesy chips are pretty standard for Pringles, though slightly high in saturated fat.
Again, many Pringles flavors are the same, and these are on par with the rest of the lineup. Though a bit high in sodium and carbs, this spicy flavor is an OK choice.
Pringles Scorchin' Chili & Lime
These may be hot, but they're not full of sodium or carbs! Well, they have a decent amount, but compared to other Pringles, they're right in line. All the flavor without all the salt!
We love that these Pringles actually taste like pizza. It makes them a decent snack when you're craving an actual pizza.
The ranch flavor is popular among chips but usually adds salt. With ranch Pringles, there's no more salt than the other flavors!
Pringles Salt & Vinegar
With a salt and vinegar chip, you can usually expect more salt, but not with Pringles. These salty chips don't actually contain more sodium than other flavors.
Ruffles All Dressed
These chips are all dressed up with flavor, but not the sodium. They have the same 1.5 grams of saturated fat that most Ruffles have, which we're not terribly concerned by.
Ruffles Cheddar & Sour Cream
Here's that extra salt that comes with a cheesy flavor. These aren't too bad nutritionally, but there are better cheese options on this list.
Ruffles Double Crunch Zesty Cheddar
These are one of Ruffles' lower-fat options, but the sodium and carbs are still pretty similar to the rest of the lineup. In fact, all of Ruffles' chips are fairly similar!
Herr's Kettle Cooked Russet
Most of Herr's chips have quite a bit of sodium, but this is one of the options that's a little lower. Plus, for a kettle-cooked chip, it's not too bad when it comes to fat!
SunChips Harvest Cheddar
We love that SunChips keeps the saturated fat on the low side in these chips. It helps us forgive the level of sodium, carbs, and sugar.
Herr's Kettle Cooked Lattice Classic
Simply for aesthetics, these lattice chips are a must-try. The saturated fat is a little higher than we'd like, but they're still fairly low in sodium.
SunChips Chili Lime
These SunChips are right in the same lane as most of the lineup—decent all around, including low fat and low calories.
Lay's Kettle Cooked Flamin' Hot
Much of Lay's kettle cooked chips are around the same nutritionally, including these Flamin' Hot ones. They're not terrible in terms of calories or salt and also don't have much fat or saturated fat.
Lay's Cheddar & Sour Cream
The flavoring in these chips is going to add a little bit of sodium, thanks to the cheese packing a salty punch. However, the salt content per serving isn't as bad as some of the chip varieties on this list.
Ruffles Jalapeño Ranch
These flavorful Ruffles don't add a ton of extra salt or carbs, which is great to see. These are an all-around decent choice—not awesome, but not awful.
Kettle Brand Jalapeño
Kettle Brand's spicy chips may not be the best spicy potato chip, but they aren't too bad with sodium and carbs. Plus they have 2 grams of fiber and protein!
Kettle Brand Farmstand Ranch
Whereas so many ranch-flavored chips have a lot of sodium, Kettle Brand's aren't too bad. Plus, they don't pack in a ton of fat either.
Lay's Sour Cream & Onion
The sour cream and onion flavor doesn't actually add too much in the way of the overall nutrition, keeping the sodium and carb content pretty on par with Lay's plain flavors, as well as other brands' flavors.
Lay's Classic Potato Chips
If you just love a classic chip, Lay's Classic really isn't too bad of an option. Comparatively speaking, the sodium is on par with many of the other options here, and the carbs are on the lower end. Plus, barely any sugar!
Pringles Cheddar & Sour Cream
The addition of sour cream to these cheesy Pringles actually brings the salt content down a bit, so if you don't mind the creamy flavor, pick these over the plain cheddar.
Pringles Sour Cream & Onion
One of Pringles' lower-sodium options is the sour cream and onion flavor. It still has more saturated fat than we'd like, but that seems to come with all the Pringles.
Pringles Screamin' Dill Pickle
We love a pickle-flavored chip! These are also lower in sodium than many other options, though higher in saturated fat.
Pringles Scorchin' BBQ
These barbecue Pringles give you the hot, smoky flavor without too much extra sugar, which is a rare treat. Plus, they're not terrible in terms of salt.
Kettle Brand Korean Barbecue
These Kettle Brand chips have a bit of sugar to round out the barbecue taste but are otherwise not a bad choice. Only 140 calories per serving!
Kettle Brand Pepperoncini
The unique flavor of these pepperoncini chips makes them worth trying at least once no matter what. Plus they have no sugar and are low in calories.
Kettle Brand Krinkle Cut Truffle & Sea Salt
Who doesn't love a truffle chip? OK, so maybe truffle isn't a universally loved flavor, but these chips are worth trying anyways, especially because they have 2 grams of fiber and protein each without too much sodium or fat.
Kettle Brand Krinkle Cut Salt & Fresh Ground Pepper
These salt-flavored chips don't add too much extra salt! They actually have less salt than some of Kettle Brand's flavors that don't have salt in the name.
Tostitos Hint of Guacamole
At least with these guacamole-flavored chips you aren't adding any extra calories and fat from actual avocados. Although eating an actual avocado is healthier…
You can't go wrong with the classic Ruffles potato chip. For a plain chip, the nutrition label is exactly what you'd expect. Plus, they're truly made with just potatoes, salt, and oil.
Kettle Brand Parmesan Garlic
Parmesan flavor without a ton of salt? Count us in. These chips are a decent option in terms of sodium, calories, and carbs, so you can have a ton of crunchy flavor.
SunChips Garden Salsa
Now here is a salsa-flavored chip that's pretty good in terms of nutrition. It's low in calories, fat, saturated fat, and sodium. The slightly elevated amount of carbs is the tradeoff for lower amounts of everything else, but we call this one a good option.
SunChips French Onion
Also a solid SunChips option, the french onion flavor's nutrition label mirrors the other healthiest options, giving you a well-balanced chip that's also made with whole grains.
Ruffles Sour Cream & Onion
These Ruffles have slightly less sodium than many of the brand's other options, but still have 10 grams of fat, plus 2 grams of sugar.
Lay's Kettle Cooked Mesquite BBQ
Lay's kettle barbecue chips do have more sugar than the other kettle-cooked chips, thanks to the barbecue flavoring, which means they also have a higher carb content.
Pringles Honey Mustard
Pringles' Honey Mustard chips are lower in sodium than many of the other Pringles but don't have much added sugar. Plus, they're made with real honey, so you know they're delicious.
Lay's Chile Limón
This refreshing chip flavor also packs a bit of heat. They're a solid go-to option for snacking (in moderation!), considering they're a little lower in sugar than some others and aren't super high in sodium or carbs.
Cape Cod Sweet Mesquite Barbeque
This is a great barbecue-flavored potato chip option with not too much salt or fat. Even the amount of carbs isn't terrible.
Cape Cod Waves Less Fat Sea Salt
Not only do these chips have less fat, but they also have less salt, which is great. They have more carbs than we'd like, but compared to the fat and sodium, not a bad choice.
Pringles BBQ have what you'd expect in terms of sodium—not too terribly much—but they also don't have extra sugar, making these a winning pick.
The original Tostitos are an all-around good snacking chip, especially when paired with salsa. They're low in sodium and fat (but do have some carbs) and are one of the better choices on this list.
Lay's Sweet Southern Heat BBQ
Lay's Sweet Southern Heat BBQ flavor is a little bit sweet and a little bit hot, so we absolutely understand wanting to snack on these. They're relatively low in sodium (compared to others) but do have a bit of sugar. These are a decent flavorful option.
You're naturally going to get a little bit of sugar with barbecue-flavored chips, which also bumps up the carbs a little bit. The sodium is a little lower on this flavor, though.
Kettle Brand Less Fat Sea Salt
While these are billed as low fat, they're not really lower than some of the other chips in this list. They are lower than other Kettle Brand chips, though, so if you can't go without Kettle chips, reach for these.
Cape Cod Dark Russet
Thank you, Cape Cod, for making a delicious potato chip with a tolerable amount of sodium and calories and with no sugar. They pack in so much crunchy goodness without a ton of the bad stuff.
Lay's Kettle Cooked Maui Onion
You'll love the oniony flavor on these chips—and the fact that they don't come with a ton of added sodium. They're also not bad in terms of calories and fat, so if you want to be transported to Hawaii (sort of), pick these!
Kettle Brand Sour Cream and Onion
Ah, a sour cream flavor that doesn't pack in the salt—we love to see it. These chips are also low in saturated fat, which is a huge pro.
Kettle Brand Bourbon Barbecue
While there is 1 gram of sugar in these chips to get that barbecue flavor, they're still low in sodium and carbs. Plus, there are 2 grams of protein and fiber.
Kettle Brand New York Cheddar
Cheese flavors often come with extra salt, but not Kettle Brand's New York Cheddar! Instead, these are low in all bad stuff across the board.
Lay's Kettle Cooked Jalapeño
This variety of kettle chip is a little lower in fat than some of the other options in the list and doesn't have quite as much sodium as many others. These chips will give you a fiery bite without too many calories, too!
Cape Cod Waves White Cheddar & Sour Cream
Protein is not easy to come by in potato chips, but these have 3 grams per serving, which is awesome. They're also low in everything you want to be low, so these are a win.
Kettle Brand Honey Dijon
It's a happy day when you can find a honey-flavored chip without too much sugar or carbs. This is one of them! Plus, one serving of these chips is rather low in sodium.
Kettle Brand Krinkle Cut Dill Pickle
There's no sugar in these pickle chips! Plus they're crinkle cut, which is just always a good idea.
Kettle Brand Backyard Barbecue
Despite being a barbecue flavor, these chips only have 1 gram of sugar and only 15 grams of carbs per serving, which is more on the healthy side than some other options.
Cape Cod Waves Honey BBQ
One of Cape Cod's lower-sodium options is this honey barbecue flavor, which also is low in fat, saturated fat, and calories!
Cape Cod Waves Sea Salt
Another salt-flavored chip with not a lot of added salt. Cape Cod does a nice job of keeping the chips ever so slightly on the healthier side compared to some of the other brands, and this flavor is no different.
SunChips are made with whole grains and have a pretty thin ingredient list—which is a good thing. The original flavor doesn't add anything extra and makes for a good chip to pair with a sandwich or salad.
Cape Cod Sea Salt Waffle Cut
Who doesn't love a waffle-cut chip? Not only are these fun and unique but they don't have a lot of salt, and no sugar at all.
Lay's Kettle Cooked Sea Salt & Cracked Pepper
What we love about these chips is the fact that they're a salty variety without actually adding in a ton of salt. The sodium level isn't too bad for a salt flavor here, which makes this a prime pick if you're looking for something with bold salt flavor.
Cape Cod Original
Cape Cod's original flavor dials it down on the sodium, plus there's no sugar. They're even low in saturated fat!
You can scoop up all the salsa you want with these chips—they're a solid low-sodium option and don't have a ton of carbs. They're a little higher in saturated fat than some of the others here, but still lower than many others.
Tostitos Hint of Lime
These corn chips give you all the flavor without anything extra. They're a decently low-fat option with next to no sugar, plus they don't have a ton of salt.
Lay's Honey BBQ
Hello, lower-sodium option! While these honey barbecue chips have a bit of carbs and sugar, they're lower in sodium than many others and pretty standard in terms of calories.
Kettle Brand Sea Salt
Now here is a salt-flavored chip that doesn't pack in a ton of sodium. Not only that, but these also have 2 grams of fiber and no sugar, so we're definitely digging these.
Lay's Lightly Salted
These low-salt chips are indeed skimpy on sodium, but they're also not a bad option in terms of carbs! Plus, there's next to no sugar. The calorie count is average, making these low-sodium chips an OK choice, though probably not the best compared to some other low-salt varieties.
Fritos Lightly Salted Corn Chips
Despite these Fritos being lower in sodium, they still have just as many calories and carbs as most of the other chips on this list. If you're looking for a lower-sodium option, these are a good choice.
Tostitos Simply Organic Blue Corn
These are a great simple, clean chip. Made from nothing but organic blue corn, oil, and salt, these corn chips are a great pick, especially for salsa (another healthy pick!). They're low in calories, fat, saturated fat, and sodium, though they do have a bit of carbs.
Lay's Lightly Salted BBQ
The interesting part about these chips is that they're lower in sodium but a little higher in sugar because they're barbecue flavored. It makes them a little trickier to classify, because it depends on which metric is more important to you. We think the lower sodium is more important, because while the sugar is higher, it's still relatively low.
Kettle Brand Unsalted
Here's the thing about these unsalted chips—health-wise, they're probably the best option. There's absolutely no salt, they only have two ingredients (potatoes and oil), and there's no sugar. The amount of carbs is standard for what you'll find in a potato chip, and they have 2 grams each of fiber and protein. If you like the taste of an unsalted chip, this should be your first pick.
Lay's Kettle Cooked Original
These are about the cleanest chips you'll see. They're made from just potatoes, oil, and salt, and while they might hold a little more oil than a standard chip, they are much lower in salt while still maintaining the calories and fat.
Tostitos Lightly Salted
This one is a winner. Made with just three ingredients, the lightly salted Tostitos corn chip has an incredibly low sodium content, along with not much fat or saturated fat. While there are some carbs and calories (of course, because of the oil and corn), it's still a better choice than everything else on this list.
