Costco Is Selling 2 Mini Versions of This Popular Baked Good
From 3-pound caramel tres leche bars to 5-pound pumpkin cheesecakes, Costco isn't known to skimp on sweets. What's even better than the amount of cake is the price: Members can expect to pay under $16 for either dessert.
Though bulk treats might keep money in your pocket, their massive calorie counts aren't always good for your health. That's why we're fans of slicing Costco's desserts into smaller portions to share with family or friends, which helps keep your carb and sugar intake on track.
If you're looking for ways to indulge smarter this Thanksgiving, two mini versions of one of America's favorite desserts were recently spotted back in the freezer section at Costco. These individual cheesecakes contain significantly less calories than Costco's original version, which a dietician on the Eat This, Not That! Medical Expert Board previously dubbed The #1 Worst Costco Bakery Item.
"Of course, most baked goods are chock-full of fat and sugar, but the plain cheesecake contains way too many of both to be considered a good-for-you choice," Lauren Manaker MS, RDN, LD, CLEC, founder of Nutrition Now Counseling and author of Fueling Male Fertility, said earlier this year.
The first of two mini cheesecakes was spotted by Instagrammer @CostcoBuys. Though the Eli's Cheesecake Bites also come in bulk packages, they contain 54 individual portions inside. That means you get 18 pieces of each flavor: original, cheesecake brownie, and raspberry. Expect to pay about $12.69 for this item.
Meanwhile, Instagram user @CostcoHotFinds posted about the under-$20 boxes of Junior's Mini Cheesecakes, which also weigh in at more than 2 pounds. They include 24 cheesecakes evenly divided into three varieties: original, chocolate swirl, and strawberry swirl. "They are so so good," one fan wrote in the comments section of the post. "I've been getting them my past 3 trips to Costco."
According to CostcoChaser, a serving size of the Eli's Cheesecake Bites equals one cheesecake bite, which has 80 calories. Per the packaging, the Junior's Mini Cheesecakes have 140 calories or less per serving. Meanwhile, one slice of Costco's original cheesecake has 420 calories. Thus, you save at least 280 calories by going small.
