The Internet Is Saying Goodbye to This Beloved '80s Ice Cream That Was Just Discontinued

And people are devastated.

After nearly 40 years of gracing ice cream trucks, convenience store freezers, and supermarket shelves, Klondike's beloved Choco Taco is being laid to rest.

Rumors circulated throughout the year about the discontinuation of the taco-shaped frozen treat, with Klondike reassuring ice cream fanatics about the item's availability up until last week. However, the brand confirmed yesterday that the novelty ice cream is no more due to an "unprecedented spike in demand" for Klondike products over the past two years. The news sparked a frenzy on social media, where many have been grieving the loss of the chocolate-covered summer staple.

Twitter user @DatGuy83 user wrote, "Out of everything that has happened over the last few years, the news that the Choco Taco is no more has to be the hardest to hear. I'm going to need time to process this and deal with it. Hug your loved ones, you never know when they might be gone."

In a Reddit thread that started after the news broke and has since racked up more than 2,000 comments, one person wrote, "I feel like I took it for granted." Users soon flocked to the post to mourn together.

Other social media users posted videos and television and movie clips to convey their reactions to the discontinuation.

Alexis Ohanian, the co-founder of Reddit, even proposed an idea to Unilever, the company that owns Klondike, in an effort to keep the Choco Taco alive.

Another Twitter user tagged Klondike in a tweet yesterday, writing, "Hey @Klondikebar there are bad decisions, like getting a face tattoo or french kissing an alligator, then there are horrifically bad inexcusable decisions like discontinuing the Choco Taco.#sayitaintso #savethechocotaco."

Klondike responded to the user this morning, leaving fans with a glimmer of hope for the future:
