5 Major Changes McDonald's Made to Its Menu This Summer

The fast-food chain added, subtracted, and tweaked some of its famous foods.

McDonald's really kept loyal customers on their toes the past couple of months. From getting rid of staple items to, as of recently, adding new limited-edition options, the fast-food chain has changed its menu quite a bit.

At the beginning of the pandemic, McDonald's had to temporarily remove several beloved menu items (in addition to eliminating breakfast all day) in order to have fewer employees working together indoors at one time. Now that summer is on its way out, McDonald's has restored some of those menu items that initially got the boot, plus introduced some new ones.

McDonald's added some spice to its McNuggets.

Just recently, McDonald's announced that it would end the summer season by giving its beloved Chicken McNuggets a spicy makeover. The Spicy Chicken McNuggets and Mighty Hot Sauce, which is made of red peppers and hot chilis, will be available on September 16 for a limited time. And, to help extinguish the fire in your mouth, the chain is also debuting a brand new dessert: The Chips Ahoy! McFlurry. (Related: The Unhealthiest Fast Food Desserts on the Planet).

It's making its beef more sustainable.

McDonald's is committed to reducing its carbon footprint, which is why the company teamed up with Target, Cargill, and The Nature Conservancy to help reduce their collective greenhouse gas emissions. Together, the brands are putting $8.5 million toward improving the soil in farmland across Nebraska, which is where McDonald's sources a lot of its beef. While this change is not one you would see on the menu, it does positively affect the quality of current menu options. Most importantly, this change helps to keep the soil diverse and nutrient-rich so that it can continue to grow McDonald's foods well into the future.

The chain cut salads… temporarily.

One way McDonald's has attempted to protect its employees (and improve its efficiency) during the coronavirus pandemic has been to eliminate salads from the menu. These items require more time to prepare, so with them gone, every location has been able to reduce the number of staff in the kitchen at one time. When salads will appear back on the menu has yet to be announced.

It brought back vanilla ice cream.

McDonald's cut many menu items at the height of the pandemic, but in June, the chain was able to bring back its beloved soft-serve vanilla ice cream cone just before the summer heat really went into effect. (Related: We Tasted 5 Fast-Food Vanilla Ice Creams—This Was the Best).

It introduced a new, celeb-branded item.

McDonald's has added a celebrity-endorsed meal to its menu for the first time in 30 years. The Travis Scott Meal, inspired by the rapper's love for McD's, includes a Quarter Pounder with cheese, bacon, and lettuce, as well as a medium-size box of French fries, BBQ sauce, and a Sprite for $6. It's only available now until October 4.
