Exercise Is the Ultimate Facelift
Exercise is not only essential for good health, it makes your skin look amazing and youthful, thanks to all the blood rushing to your skin after getting your heart rate up. "This provides oxygen and nutrients to the skin cells and clears impurities from the skin, creating a post-workout glow," says board-certified dermatologist Edidiong Kaminska, MD, FAAD.
If you want to maintain a youthful appearance, alcohol is not your friend. "Alcohol is actually one of the worst, most aggressive compounds to destroy your skin," says nutritionist Jairo Rodriguez. "I always joke with my patients, 'If you want to get older, go ahead and drink!' Drinking is classified as two drinks a day. There's a huge amount of damage to the skin that occurs; alcohol affects any mucous membrane, from the pancreas and liver to the skin. The first effect is dehydration, as it actually takes all the fluid out of the skin. If you look at a woman who has been drinking for 20 or 30 years, and a woman the same age who hasn't at all, we see a massive difference in the skin—more wrinkles from that dehydration damage, which can make you look 10 years older."
Limit Sun Exposure
Too much sun will prematurely age your skin, so make sure to protect yourself with sunscreen and appropriate clothing. "Too much sun exposure can break down our skin's elasticity causing it to be thick like leather or thin like tissue paper," says Mona Brownfield, MD. "Not only that, UV rays can damage collagen proteins in the skin, leading to sagging or loose skin, and speed up the production of melanin (cells that give the skin its color) causing dark age spots."
Smoking is not only terrible for your overall health, it prematurely ages your skin and makes you look older than you really are. "Smoking can speed up the normal aging process of your skin, contributing to wrinkles and other changes to the appearance of your face," says J. Taylor Hays, M.D. "These changes include crow's-feet, pronounced lines between the eyebrows, uneven skin complexion, a grayish tone on lighter skin, deep creases and puffiness below the eyes, wrinkles around the mouth, and thinner lips."
Stress Is Bad For Your Skin
Chronic stress—for example, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic—is linked to weight gain, weight loss, wrinkles, and more. "There is no question that this pandemic has added years to my skin and hair," says dermatologist Mona Gohara, M.D, associate clinical professor at Yale School of Medicine. "Cortisol is proinflammatory, meaning it will make acne and any other skin condition worse, but it also accelerates aging and can cause hair loss and hair thinning." The solution?
