This Major Grocery Store Just Won a Big Award for Its Vegan Options

It has the biggest array of meat- and dairy-free foods for you to shop, according to PETA.

For the first time in history, PETA (yes, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has created a Top Grocer Award as a way to honor the grocery store chain that offers the best array of vegan products. And the winner is… Aldi!

The popular grocery store chain's diverse vegan offerings are actually what inspired the animal rights organization to make this "Top Grocer by PETA" award a thing in the first place after employees at PETA's headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia noticed the plethora of options at two nearby Aldi locations. From vegan queso dip to pints of vegan ice cream, the grocery chain gives flexitarians, vegetarians, and vegans a wide range of foods that fit their diets.

"ALDI recognizes that consumers today care about animal welfare, their own health, and the impact that a meat- and dairy-heavy diet has on the environment—and it deserves to be recognized for offering shoppers a host of tasty vegan foods," says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk.

The award that PETA gave to Aldi reads: "PETA recognizes and commends Aldi for promoting compassion for all animals and protecting human health by offering a wide variety of vegan foods."

This recognition comes just months after scares of a meat shortage loomed over the U.S. in late April, as many workers at several big meat-processing plants tested positive for COVID-19 and had to temporarily shut down facilities. The meat shortage, coupled with consumers' desire to introduce more plant-based foods into their diets to help combat disease and climate change, largely contributed to the country's shift in purchasing meat alternatives. By mid-April, sales of plant-based meat in the U.S. grew by 200% in comparison with the same time period the year prior.

In addition to supplying a host of popular vegetarian and vegan brands such as Amy's Kitchen, Beyond Meat, Gardein, and JUST, Aldi also has its own line of plant-based products called Aldi's Earth Grown foods.

So, if you're a vegetarian or vegan, or simply looking for more food options at the grocery store, Aldi may have what you're looking for. Also, if you're thinking about cutting animal protein from your diet, you may be interested in reading 6 Reasons You Should Stop Eating Meat Right Now.
