We Tried Every Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich & This Is the Best

When you're craving Chick-fil-A, this is the sandwich you need to add to your next order!

One of my favorite fast-food places to grab a quick, but filling lunch is Chick-fil-A. The drive-thru chicken spot is known around the country for its tasty chicken sandwiches, nuggets, waffle fries, and even its hot cookies. When I hit the drive-thru I'm usually ordering a classic sandwich with no pickles and a sweet tea to take away with me to eat while I drive to my destination.

But let's just be honest, there's more on the menu at Chick-fil-A than just the original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich. In fact, there are seven different sandwiches and wraps on the menu. The chicken sandwich wars might be over for now, but I decided it was time to see what Chick-fil-A sandwich was actually the best. This is what I discovered.

Worst: Chick-fil-A Deluxe Sandwich with American Cheese

Chick-fil-A

While none of the items I tasted were actually bad, something has to come in last and that's where the Chick-fil-A Deluxe Sandwich with American Cheese comes in. The sandwich is a fried chicken filet with pickles, lettuce, tomato, and American cheese. While the tomato added some much-needed moisture to the overall package the American cheese did take away from the sandwich, leaving that fake coating covering my palate that American cheese usually leaves behind. I found myself wanting to dip this into the side of sauce or peel away the American cheese to actually finish this sandwich.

Grilled Chicken Sandwich

The Grilled Chicken Sandwich wasn't horrible, but it also wasn't memorable. To start, the chicken didn't even cover the entire bun, making some pieces just bread. I did like that the actual bun was a multigrain bun, which added a bit of flavor to the otherwise bland sandwich. The description of the sandwich says the chicken breasts are marinated in a lemon-herb marinade but I didn't taste any of that. The lettuce and tomato on the sandwich didn't really enhance it either. While the lettuce was crisp there was a lot of it and the tomato was almost white because tomatoes are not actually in season right now.

Chick-fil-A Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich

This was the overall favorite of the grilled chicken sandwiches. The Chick-fil-A Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich starts with a multigrain bun, topped with a piece of grilled chicken, then lettuce, tomato, bacon, and Colby Jack cheese. The overall sandwich construction was okay. I wish the cheese had been melted a bit more, and the bacon was a bit crisper, but that's all personal preference. The out-of-season tomato also took away from the sandwich because it just felt like a slippery piece of cardboard, versus something to actually add flavor. If you're looking for a grilled sandwich this is the best, but there are better tasting options on the menu still.

Spicy Chicken Sandwich

When Chick-fil-A says spicy they mean spicy with this sandwich. The piece of chicken was thick and very juicy. The acidity from the pickles helped to cut through the deep-fried chicken. One thing that knocked this sandwich down among its competitors is that it's more of a black pepper-type spice versus a buffalo wing spice. After eating this sandwich I felt like I needed to drink a glass of milk because it was almost too spicy with not enough relief from the pickles by the time I was done with the sandwich.

These Were the Most Ordered Chick-fil-A Items in 2021

Spicy Deluxe Sandwich with Pepper Jack

This was the best of the two spicy sandwiches. The chicken filet on the sandwich was very tender and juicy. The spice was countered well with the addition of the creamy cheese, even though it was also a spicy cheese. The pickles, again, helped to cut through how savory the sandwich was with the addition of something acidic. While the lettuce and tomato were on the sandwich, they weren't really needed. In fact, I ended up taking them off partway through.

Chick-fil-A Cool Wrap

The dark horse in this taste test was the Chick-fil-A Cool Wrap, which I was fully expecting not to like as much as I did, having never actually eaten one before. The wrap takes sliced grilled chicken, and layers it in with lettuce and shredded cheese before getting wrapped in a flaxseed flour flatbread. The wrap was super light and refreshing, and the actual flatbread was still very moist. The one downfall to the wrap was that it wasn't filled all the way to the ends so there were a few bites at both ends that were just the flatbread.

The Worst Chicken Sandwiches on Restaurant Menus

Best: Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich

The best sandwich at Chick-fil-A is the OG Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich. There's a reason this sandwich is number one on all of the menus, and it's because it's the best item on the menu. The sandwich was perfectly crispy on the outside and the coating had a lot of flavor. The chicken was thick and juicy and even hung out over the side of the bun in a few spots. The pickle adds a nice bright punch without being the star of the show. If you're looking to really try the best sandwich at Chick-fil-A this is the one to get.
