Costco Is Making Changes to Its Unpopular App

Say hello to mobile payments and warehouse receipts!

There are more than 100 million Costco members out there in the world. If you're one of them, you can browse products from more than 800 warehouses, plus a website and a mobile application.

The app gives you access to Costco's latest promotions, as well as the current gas prices at your local warehouse and even a digital copy of your membership card.

Unfortunately, it doesn't have the best reputation among loyal shoppers. However, Costco just revealed that updates are finally on the way. Here's everything we know so far about the "new changes."

Members say the Costco app is glitchy, outdated, and slow.

"It's 2021," Reddit user @a_hi_lawyer wrote in a thread about the Costco app in mid-September. "Costco should have a much better web/app presence than it does."

Another member declared the tool be the very "worst" app that they "put up with on a regular basis." Others drew comparisons to rival warehouse chain Sam's Club and its mobile app, saying the differences were like night and day.

Thankfully, new changes are coming soon to Costco's app—and they're getting members excited!

One new feature "coming soon" to the app is mobile payments.

The brand-new October edition of Costco Connection magazine reveals that one of the new features "coming soon" to the app is mobile payments. No further details are available, so we're not entirely sure what to expect. For its part, Sam's Club has a Scan and Go feature that allows shoppers to literally scan a product's barcode, pay for it in the app, and then show a receipt on their way out the door.

In a thread about the upcoming Costco app updates, one Reddit user claimed that the mobile payment option would be added in October. Thus, you might not have to wait too much longer to try it out.

Another new feature? Warehouse receipts.

Another new feature that's coming soon? Members will be able to view their warehouse receipts in the mobile app, meaning you won't have to dig for a physical copy in the bottom of your purse or junk drawer again.

Could it all be part of a bigger plan?

While these updates sound interesting, they won't necessarily solve some of the top complaints from members i.e. issues with the log-in page or the speed of the app. However, some speculate that there's a reason why Costco isn't tackling these problems . . .

Whether this is true or not remains to be seen, but whatever Costco is doing is working—faulty app and all. Along with announcing strong sales for 2021, the CFO Says 25 New Warehouses are Opening Next Year.
