UNO Pizzeria & Grill's Whole Hog Burger
Oh, the Whole Hog Burger. It will truly go down in history, that's for sure. It featured over one pound of meat, as the two burger patties were loaded up with bacon, pepperoni, sausage, and prosciutto. And let us not forget the four types of cheeses, garlic mayonnaise, and pickles it was also stacked with. Plus, it comes with a not one, but two side dishes of fries and onion rings.
Sounds over-the-top, right? It was a menu staple that got quite a bit of attention. The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) even called out the burger in its "Xtreme Eating 2016" list. UNO's former Chief Marketing Officer Skip Weldon went on to release a statement in response, saying the burger was meant to be a spectacle.
"It was designed for this very kind of thing. We created the Whole Hog Burger to be an over-the-top eating experience that would capture the attention of our customers, taste great and be a fun challenge to conquer," he said.
While this extreme burger might've seemed like a fun idea, it was clearly not the healthiest by any means. It was alarmingly high in calories, fat, and sodium. It has more calories than the average person should eat in one day, and has more than three day's worth of sodium. It actually had more salt than you would get if you ate 760 Lay's potato chips. The American Heart Association suggests that a person consume 13 grams of saturated fat per day—it's clear this burger goes way above and beyond that number. To say this burger was dangerous was an understatement!
It quietly made its way off UNO menus, so your hopes of ever seeing a Whole Hog Burger in person are now crushed. Perhaps, that is for the best. Just looking at a photo of this burger is more than enough!
