Yoplait's New Yogurt Has Just 3 Ingredients

How many other yogurt brands can say the same?

Yogurt might seem like a relatively straightforward food, but if you've ever taken a look at the ingredient list on some brands, you'll find various sweeteners, preservatives, and artificial ingredients that are far from the simple yogurt you thought you were buying. However, Yoplait's newest line aims to whittle down that paragraph's worth of ingredients to just three simple ones you can actually pronounce and recognize.

Aptly named Just 3, the company's latest line of yogurt contains only yogurt, fruit, and cane sugar. Currently, there are four fruit-filled flavors: raspberry, strawberry, tropical, and mixed berry.

Per one container (5 oz) of Strawberry: 170 calories, 9 g fat (5 g saturated fat, 0 g trans fat), 65 mg sodium, 19 g carbs (<1 g fiber, 16 g sugar), 5 g protein

Ingredients: yogurt (cultured grade A milk, cultured grade A cream), strawberries, cane sugar

Technically, the mixed berry and tropical flavors contain more than just three ingredients because they both include an assortment of fruit, but there are no artificial flavors, preservatives, or additives in these 5-ounce cups.

For reference, the tropical flavor contains mango, pineapple, passion fruit, and bananas, whereas the mixed berry flavor contains strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries.

For a traditional non-Greek yogurt, 5 grams of protein is standard, so this yogurt cuts down on excess ingredients without taking away protein.

The one thing we'd change is the 6 to 8 grams of added sugars that are in each flavor. It's a bit more than we would like to see in a yogurt cup of this size, but it's a small improvement to have the sugar come from cane sugar instead of artificial sweeteners and additives like other yogurts include. Artificial sweeteners often don't contain any sugar at all, but they're much sweeter than typical cane sugar or sucrose (table sugar). Research has shown that consuming too many artificial sweeteners over time may make foods that are considerably less sweet such as vegetables and yes, even fruit, taste less palatable.

Still, cutting down the ingredients is a considerable step forward for the yogurt company. Just look at how the Yoplait Just 3 strawberry flavor compares to Yoplait's Original Strawberry yogurt.

Per one container (6 oz): 150 calories, 2 g fat (1.5 g saturated fat, 0 g trans fat), 90 mg sodium, 26 g carbs (N/A fiber, 19 g sugar), 6 g protein

Ingredients: cultured pasteurized grade A reduced-fat milk, sugar, strawberries, modified corn starch, kosher gelatin, natural flavor, colored with carmine, pectin, vitamin A acetate, vitamin D3

Sure, the original has fewer calories than its Just 3 counterpart, but as a result, it contains more fillers and added sugar. Of the 19 grams of sugar that's in a 6-ounce cup of this yogurt, 13 grams are from added sugars. That's a big jump for just one more ounce of yogurt (remember, the Just 3 container has 6 to 8 grams of added sugar). Not to mention, Just 3 has a higher fat content, which is known to boost satiety, meaning you won't be tempted to grab another snack!

Yoplait Just 3 just recently debuted on store shelves, so it may be a few weeks before you start to see it at your local grocery store.
