Instagrammer, Alison Grisé Wu (@alison__wu) is making more than just smoothies, she’s making artwork! After being given a Vitamix blender as a present, smoothies became Grisé Wu’s go-to breakfast. But, it wasn’t until she made a unique pink ombré smoothie that she became an overnight smoothie-making Instagram sensation. Her visually appealing treats are not only nice to look at, they’re good for your body too, so they definitely get a ‘like’ from us!
How does she make them? With super thick smoothies and coconut “nice cream”, that’s how. To make “nice cream,” freeze raw coconut pieces overnight and then throw them into a blender with a splash of nut milk. After they’re thoroughly combined, mix in some chia seeds with a spoon for added thickness and nutrition. To make the smoothie layer, avoid using too much ice or liquid, and rely primarily on frozen produce. And no matter how you flavor your layers, each one should be close to the texture of ice cream to ensure they don’t bleed or blend together.
Interested in giving Grisé Wu a run for her money? Consider starting with two alternating layers—ombre designs are a more advanced and require quite a bit of time. Once you feel up to making multiple layers, though, consider going with a berry theme. Not only do the flavors of blueberries, strawberries and blackberries complement each other nicely, they also create a beautiful ombre of blues, purples, and reds your social networks are sure to swoon over. Bonus: Berries are all potent sources of health-boosting antioxidants that have been shown to aid weight loss. Gotta love that!
