YouTube star Sara Lynn Cauchon—AKA The Domestic Geek—shares a unique burger recipe, one that’s ready to unleash its own flavor surprise.

I just want to make eating well a lot more delicious. Good food has been an obsession since my childhood—one that I’ve always believed is best shared with others. That’s why I decided to create a YouTube channel where I could share my fresh, fuss-free approach to cooking with simple recipes that anyone can enjoy.

Today, more than 1.3 million people follow my channel. When people tell me that I’ve given them control over their own food lives, and that making my simple recipes has them back on the path to better health, it’s hard not to want to do more. I recently took a look at some of the unbelievably bad-for-you burgers out there—can you believe the average restaurant burger tops 1,000 calories?—and realized it was time to perfect my own recipes.

Here are three of the burgers I love: healthy, indulgent, and easy. Paired with a simple rainbow slaw, they make the perfect family summer meal. Enjoy!

Blue Cheese Beef Burger with Bacon Jam

blue cheese burger Geneviève Caron/Eat This, Not That!

People will leave your backyard barbecue shaking their heads: What was in those burgers? The secret is to crumble blue cheese right into the meat, and then top with taste-bud conquering bacon jam. (Make the jam the night before and refrigerate. Let it return to room temperature before topping the burgers.)

Ingredients

Makes 4 servings

1 lb good quality ground beef
1 small onion, grated
1 clove of garlic, minced
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
½ cup crumbled blue cheese
(or, shredded white cheddar)
2 Tbsp bacon jam

How to Make It

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine all of the ingredients and mix well.
  2. Form four equal patties.
  3. Grill burgers until they’ve reached the desired doneness.
  4. Top with bacon jam, crumbled blue cheese, and red onion.

Rainbow Slaw

Because most cole slaw is just cabbage swimming in a marshy mire of mayo, we seldom think of it as a health food. But this version is the most nutritious indulgence you’re going to enjoy all summer. I’ve stripped out all the bad fats and substituted in olive oil and vinegar for a rich, tangy take on classic slaw.

Ingredients

Makes 4 servings

1 bunch kale, finely chopped
2 cups red cabbage, shredded
3 carrots, shredded
½ red onion, finely diced
3 Tbsp white wine vinegar
3 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp honey
1 clove of garlic, minced
Salt and pepper

How to Make It

  1. In a large bowl, combine kale, cabbage, carrots, and onion.
  2. In a small bowl, mix white wine vinegar, olive oil, honey, garlic, salt, and pepper.
  3. Pour dressing over salad and mix well.
  4. For best results, allow slaw to sit for at least one hour before serving. Enjoy
