Worst Food in the World: Fried S’mOreo

With each changing season seems to come a new slew of foods with catastrophic calorie counts—you health-minded foodies out there know exactly what we’re talking about. And if you’ve ever been curious how bad these trendy eats actually are, you’re going to love our latest column: Worst Food in the World. In each installment, we find out just how villainous these nutritional nightmares really are. Taking center stage in today’s edition is the Fried S’mOreo, a sweet treat that made its debut at Texas Rangers’ Globe Life Park earlier this year.

The team’s new concession stand, “State Fair,” is selling the sweet and crispy concoction for $8—kind of steep for a campfire classic, doncha think? So what exactly will a $5 bill and three singles get you: a deep-fried, graham cracker-breaded marshmallow that has been sandwiched between two deep-fried and battered Oreos and topped with a drizzle of chocolate sauce and Cool Whip. You also get an estimated 1,422 calories (that’s the equivalent of nearly 6 McDonald's Apple Pies), 60 grams of fat and 130 grams of sugar (that’s more than what you’d find in 47 Andes Crème de Menthe Thins) added to your frame. Just thinking about that gives me a stomachache–and maybe a sugar rush, too.

This deep-fried dish is pure culinary insanity and a definite Not That! Our advice? Indulge your sweet tooth by whipping up a classic s'mores at home, which has about 126 calories. This waist-friendly swap will keep 1,296 calories out of your belly, which is great news if you’re trying to slim down before spring turns into summer, the season of short shorts!
