Indiana governor declares public health emergency due to HIV epidemic
Per CNN: "Indiana is declaring a public health emergency in one county due to an epidemic of HIV. Gov. Mike Pence issued the order Thursday for Scott County, which has 79 confirmed cases of HIV since mid-December. The county averages about five new cases a year. 'Scott County is facing an epidemic of HIV, but this is not a Scott County problem; this is an Indiana problem,' Pence said in a news release." For the full story, click here.
Plain cigarette packs with health warnings may encourage quitting
Per Reuters: "Plain cigarette packages adorned with graphic health warnings may make smokers more likely to consider quitting, an Australian study finds. In an effort to make smoking less appealing, starting in late 2012 Australia required that cigarettes be sold in boxes emblazoned with harsh words and bold color photos illustrating the health risks. One box says "smoking kills" above a close-up image of a toe-tagged foot in the morgue; another says "smoking causes blindness" and displays a photo of an eyeball in a shriveled socket." Kohl's Bets Big On Health And Wellness To Pump Up Sales
Per Forbes: "Kohl’s is betting on items like Gaiam yoga pants, NutriBullet blenders and Fitbit fitness-tracker wristbands to add $1 billion in sales to its $2 billion health-and-wellness business in three years. It’s all part of the company’s 'Make Your Move' campaign, a bid to position the retailer as a destination for healthy lifestyle gear, from active wear to blenders that whip up nutritious smoothies, Michelle Gass, who was named to the newly created position of chief customer officer for Kohl’s last June, told Forbes."
